About Philip
I have a significant amount of tutoring experience at both university and school level, and received a distinction for my Master's dissertation in English literature. In the past, I have worked on both a one-on-one and group basis, with my preference being for the former as I find it more beneficial for the student with whom I am working. Considering that written English and the analysis of literary texts is my forte, these are the areas in which students of mine have seen the most measurable improvements.
As well as my love of English, I have a keen interest in dramatic arts, and have been both a tutor for this subject and an acting coach. I have also performed a number of times at the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown, in my native South Africa. My training in drama has gifted me with a great degree of discipline, time management and patience, making me a reliable, energetic, outgoing and attentive individual. I pride myself on my ability to get the best out of those with whom I work, and believe that I have the capacity not only to impart knowledge and learning to my students but to absorb the many lessons that they have to teach me.

From 2014-2016, I tutored first-year English at Rhodes University, South Africa, and also lectured third-year English in the final year of my Master's. In the first half on 2017 I worked for a private tutoring company called Brightsparkz, and tutored a number of secondary school students and second language adults.
I am particularly strong in assessing written work and facilitating the planning and structuring of essays. Comprehension and expression are therefore a forte of mine, as I aim to get students to not only express themselves clearly but to understand the meaning of what it is they are writing.
Although I am what one might describe as an easygoing individual, I take my position as a tutor very seriously. For me, tutoring is a reciprocal relationship in that I am always ready to put in the necessary work required for a given tutee's progression, and I expect my students to do the same. In the past, I have given homework depending on the ability and extra-curricular commitments of my students, as well as the number of times per week that I might see them. As such, I tailor my approach to tutoring depending on needs the student. I also believe that progress, while vital to a given student's confidence and overall development, cannot be rushed. The fundamentals of a given subject cannot ever be over-learned, nor can a student hope to move onto a new section of work or idea without first understanding fully the current one.

Details
Given travel costs involved in getting to and from students, my webcam rate is slightly lower than my in-person rate. I have, in the past, charged university students slightly more than school students, but this is something I am willing to forgo.
