About Catarina
I’m a friendly, approachable and enthusiastic tutor who genuinely enjoys helping learners build confidence and realise what they’re capable of. I teach English, French, Spanish, History and Sociology at Primary, GCSE and A Level, as well as supporting children in Early Years.
I have experience working with learners of different ages, abilities and backgrounds, including SEN, SEMH and ESOL. I tailor my lessons to each student, taking into account their goals, strengths and areas they find challenging. I explain things clearly, encourage questions and provide the right level of support and challenge to help students make real progress. Outside teaching, I’m passionate about animals, sustainability and environmental education, and I’m a Trustee at an animal sanctuary. I also have a long standing interest in martial arts, including Muay Thai, kickboxing, boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
My goal is simple: to help students feel more confident, make progress and enjoy learning.

My approach to tutoring is centred around creating a supportive, engaging, and personalised learning environment where students feel comfortable, understood, and motivated to progress. I strongly believe that every learner is different, so I adapt my teaching methods to suit each student’s individual needs, learning style, pace, and confidence level.
I use a flexible and student-centred approach, combining clear explanations, structured guidance, active discussion, exam-focused practice, and confidence-building activities. I aim to make lessons interactive and accessible, particularly for learners who may struggle with confidence, anxiety, SEN, SEMH needs, concentration, or previous negative experiences with education.
I also enjoy incorporating students’ interests into lessons wherever possible, helping learning feel more engaging, relevant, and enjoyable. Building positive relationships and creating a calm, encouraging atmosphere is very important to me, as I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable and genuinely interested in the session.
My lessons are typically 1 hour long, although I also offer 30-minute sessions for younger learners or students who may benefit from shorter, more focused lessons due to concentration or additional learning needs. Longer sessions can also be arranged depending on the student’s goals and preferences.
I currently work as a tutor in an independent SEMH school for learners from Year 6 to Post-16, where I also act as the AQA Award Scheme Coordinator. Alongside this, I work as a private tutor for a VIP tuition company, teaching GCSE and IGCSE English Language and Literature, French, Spanish, History, Sociology, and EAL. I also have experience teaching Functional Skills English, Maths, and Employability as a Supported Internship Tutor.
I hold a BA (Hons) First Class in Media and Cultural Studies from Middlesex University and an MSc from Linköping University in Sweden. I also have extensive experience supporting learners with SEN, SEMH, ESOL, and diverse educational backgrounds.
My lessons are suitable for a wide range of learners, including Primary, Secondary, GCSE/IGCSE, ESOL, Functional Skills, and adult learners. I work with students of varying abilities, from those needing additional support and confidence-building to more advanced learners aiming for high academic achievement.
