About Kathy
I worked as a journalist and sub-editor for 15 years before training as an ESL teacher. After teaching classroom-based ESL I began tutoring one-on-one, online and face-to-face, from my home in Sydney, Australia.
I hold a Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Macquarie University, Australia, and a certificate from Cambridge English in How to Teach IELTS*.
My students** openly appreciate my knowledge, expertise, committed professionalism and personal warmth. In turn, I consider it a privilege to teach them. I learn a lot from my students' excellent questions about tricky English grammar and vocabulary.
I am also intrigued and humbled by the stories and life experiences my students share with me. We often find we have interests or hobbies (even dislikes or fears) in common. There's always something to talk about!
Many of my students have gone on to higher training, secured visas and job promotions, set up businesses, travelled widely, and joined online communities where English is the common language.
When I'm not teaching, out hiking, seeing a movie with friends or cooking for the family, you'll find me in my garden, curled up with my dog and a good book.
I also run a freelance editing business.

My English lessons are tailored for YOU. Starting with a free trial lesson and a placement quiz, I will design a program that fits your goals -- whether for travel, work/business, immigration, or just chatting with friends.
I'll listen to what you tell me. We'll discuss your problem areas. And then we'll put a learning plan into action.
I take special care with every lesson I prepare, ensuring it has plenty of variety, great examples and fun activities. Tell me what you love doing, and I'll adapt the lessons to suit your interests as well as your learning style.
For webcam lessons I use a range of high-quality digital materials, including text, photos, cartoons, audio and video clips, games and puzzles. These lessons are delivered via your preferred platform, with an interactive whiteboard. For face-to-face lessons, there's hard-copy materials and more. I'll even make my kitchen available for cooking lessons in English (possible online, too)!
I like to build a warm rapport with my students, so they feel comfortable 'having a go'. Remember: making mistakes in a supportive environment helps you learn. Most of all, I strive to be more listener/guide and less instructor/boss, so that you, the student, can discover patterns, answers and strategies for yourself. It's empowering, and it's fun!

Perfect! Kathy takes her time to understand the students, let them express themselves and develops a plan based on their shortcomings. A good lesson overall, I totally recommend.
- The trial lesson with Brigid went very well, from my perspective. Brigid displayed an impressive range of vocabulary and a good command of grammar. We plan to work on her IELTS writing and speaking skills, some pronunciation matters, and exam strategies. I encourage Brigid to read widely and communicate as often as she can with English speakers, in order to further develop her fluency in English, accumulate knowledge and boost her confidence in offering opinions on a range of topics. I have been receiving some great help from Ms Kathy in improving my listening, reading, writing and speaking skills in English. I moved to Australia when I was at high school age from a non English speaking background.

Lessons cancelled and/or rescheduled less than 12 hours prior to scheduled time incur a penalty of 50% of the advertised lesson fee.
'No-shows' pay 100% of the advertised lesson fee -- no refunds.
