About Sian
I have over 15 years’ experience in education and am a qualified secondary mathematics teacher, current Head of Maths and former Headteacher. I have taught students across a very wide range of attainment, from those who lack confidence or have significant gaps in their mathematical knowledge to highly attaining students preparing for further study in mathematics.
I am passionate about helping young people develop confidence, curiosity and a genuine enjoyment of mathematics. I particularly enjoy helping students move beyond simply memorising methods to understanding why mathematics works, and seeing students begin to view themselves as capable mathematicians.
I have a particular professional interest in mathematics anxiety and have delivered training to teachers on recognising, understanding and reducing it in the classroom. I believe that understanding the emotional and psychological barriers to learning mathematics is just as important as identifying gaps in mathematical knowledge. Anxiety, previous experiences and a learner’s beliefs about their own mathematical ability can create significant blocks to learning, even where the underlying ability is strong. My approach therefore focuses not only on what a student is finding difficult, but on understanding why that difficulty exists, helping to remove those barriers and rebuild confidence alongside mathematical understanding.
I hold a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics, a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics with QTS and an MSc in Psychology. I am currently undertaking postgraduate study and research in mathematics education at the University of Oxford, allowing me to bring together current educational research and extensive classroom experience in my teaching.

My approach to tutoring is highly personalised: I begin by identifying each student’s existing knowledge, misconceptions and areas of confidence, then tailor teaching accordingly. I believe that successful mathematics learning comes from genuine understanding rather than simply memorising procedures, so I focus on helping students understand both how and why mathematics works.
Lessons combine clear explanation and modelling with carefully chosen questions, guided practice and increasingly independent problem solving. I use ongoing assessment throughout each session to identify misconceptions quickly and adapt my teaching in response, rather than following a predetermined programme regardless of the student’s needs.
Lessons are designed to be enjoyable and fun. Getting to know the students' interests and hobbies and developing an understanding of how they work and think allows me to tailor lessons to their interests and optimise for their progress.
For GCSE and A-Level students, I combine the development of secure mathematical understanding with explicit examination preparation, including problem-solving strategies, mathematical reasoning, exam technique and targeted work on individual areas of weakness. For students preparing for STEP/MAT and other mathematics admissions assessments, the emphasis shifts towards deeper mathematical thinking, unfamiliar problems and developing flexible approaches to challenging questions.
Maths anxiety is a common issue for a lot of learners. This has no bearing on their ability or potential but needs careful assessment and explicit teaching of strategies to ensure that they meet that potential.
Lessons are available for GCSE Mathematics, A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, as well as university admissions preparation. Sessions are typically 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged where appropriate. Homework is always set during the lesson and used to inform next steps.
