I am a dedicated Mathematics Teacher and Instructional Coach with over 16 years of experience in the New York City public school system. My teaching philosophy is centered on relieving mathematics anxiety by creating a supportive environment where students feel safe to explore complex concepts. I believe every student possesses prior knowledge that can be unlocked and applied to master new, rigorous academic tasks.
I utilize a student-centered and culturally responsive approach to ensure that math feels relevant and accessible. My techniques include:
- Scaffolded Instruction: I break down "Next Generation" aligned curriculum into manageable steps to prevent overwhelm.
- Modeling and Co-exploration: Drawing from my experience as an instructional coach, I model effective strategies and then work alongside the student to practice them.
-Data-Driven Strategies: I use structured mathematical strategies to identify specific learning gaps and address them directly.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
1. Mindset Check & Prior Knowledge Activation: We begin by discussing a familiar concept to reduce anxiety and build a bridge to the day's lesson.
2. Collaborative Task: We engage in a common-core aligned task, focusing on the "why" behind the formulas.
3. Reflective Practice: I lead the student through a period of reflective growth, where they explain their process to solidify their understanding.
