About Amaan
My decision to teach Mathematics was influenced by the fact that it is a subject of fundamental importance. I am a firm believer that referring to real world examples where possible is a strong method of showing a topic’s relevance, such as using hours worked and wages to generate questions on proportion, or children’s ages when introducing averages. I have seen how the shift in questioning, to involve more functional skills, in the new scheme of work can engage pupils in the subject and enhance their understanding, which in turn makes it more fun to teach. The beauty of Mathematics is something that I enjoy sharing with pupils and helping them to discover, whilst teaching compound interest to a year nine group, the key concept they needed to understand was the difference behind simple and compound interest. In the previous lesson, I had set them a research task to investigate student loans, their interest rates and any other financial product where interest is applied; savings accounts, business loans, mortgages etc. This enabled them to come in with various different facts and statistics, which we then were able to discuss in greater detail. This included the pros and cons of studying for a degree, the difference in cost between staying at home and living on campus, bursaries, maintenance grants etc. The pupils understood, were engaged throughout and allowing them to work in groups created a great atmosphere and stimulating environment. The students left the room intending to undertake further research and I had parents mention that their children were going home and sharing what they had learnt with them as well. At my first school after qualifying, I worked as both a teacher and a tutor, primarily for Key Stage 4 C/D borderline pupils. We generated successful outcomes for our pupils resulting in the highest A*-C pass rate the department and the school had ever achieved, for three successive years. At my second school, with successive GCSE groups, my pupils have managed an average of just over three levels of progress, with 10% making five levels of progress. As a result of their dedication we had an A*-C/9-4 rate of 94% with 13% achieving A*-A/9-7. At my previous school, I gained experience in teaching the MYP and IB international curricula to pupils from many different home countries, with a particular focus on projects and extended, multi-stage questions.
