About James
A passionate music tutor with a desire to make learning an instrument fun for kids, teens and adults.
I have 6+ years of experience playing in contemporary bands, and have taught in primary and secondary schools for a music academy, as well as privately, the last few years.
I want my students to understand the music they play, understand why it works and discover a passion they didn't know they had.
My ethos is that, if you break lessons, theory, pieces and parts down into manageable chunks, anyone can learn!
I also have a current DBS, so am police-checked to work with minors.

A typical lesson starts with a technical skill, a scale or some music theory, before learning 1-2 songs (depending on the individual's goals and lesson length). Students may aim for an additional 30-minute practice 1-2 times a week.
Lessons lengths I recommend:
- 30-minutes (up to year 3)
- 45 minutes (year 4-7)
- 60 minutes (year 8-adult)
A student may learn 1-2 songs a half term, though this is tailored to the individual's pace, practice levels and age. (For example, a grade piece and a song of your choice.)
I have experience teaching for music academies, in primary and secondary schools, as well as 1-1 adult lessons.
Really, I want to make a good musician of you, so for teenager and adult students I focus on more holistic musicianship than completing grades alone. This includes the music theory to understand what you're playing and playing by ear.
