About Roisin

I am a qualified UK based teacher with 20 years of experience and significant experience supporting pupils with literacy and reading challenges.

During my teaching career in Hertfordshire, I trained in and used the Herts for Learning Reading Fluency approach. I have seen how targeted, supportive reading work can help pupils who have learned to decode words but still find reading effortful or struggle to understand and really comprehend more difficult texts.

My sessions are calm, encouraging and age-appropriate. This is particularly important for older children: reading support should never feel babyish or embarrassing.

I am also very happy to work with parents who want practical advice about supporting their child's reading at home.

About the lesson

I provide individual reading support for KS2 and KS3 pupils who can read the words on the page but may read slowly, hesitantly or without expression, or struggle to fully understand and engage with what they have read.

I begin by identifying the specific barriers affecting your child's reading. Sessions are then tailored to develop the areas they need most, including reading accuracy, automaticity, pace, expression and prosody, vocabulary and reading comprehension.

My approach draws on the Herts for Learning (now HFL Education) Reading Fluency approach, which I was trained to use during my teaching career in Hertfordshire. Sessions may include modelled fluent reading, echo reading, repeated reading, carefully selected challenging texts, discussion and explicit comprehension strategies.

The aim is not simply to get a child to read faster. It is to help them become a more fluent, confident reader who can understand and engage with increasingly challenging texts.

I provide appropriate texts and resources for sessions and can also suggest short activities for practice between lessons.

Parent support is also available. I can help parents understand what may be causing their child's reading difficulties and demonstrate practical strategies they can use at home.
