Differentiated instruction is my method in teaching because it adjusts content (what students learn), process (how they learn), and product (how they demonstrate learning) so that each child receives the right level of challenge.
This prevents advanced learners from feeling bored and struggling learners from feeling overwhelmed especially for K-5th students.
Lesson Flow
1. Learning Objectives
Content Goal: Student will read a short passage and identify the main idea, key details, and new vocabulary.
Skill Goal: Student will use context clues to determine word meanings.
Affective Goal: Student will express personal connections to the story.
2. Pre-Assessment (3–5 min)
Quick chat to gauge mood and readiness.
Ask: “What’s your favorite thing to do at the park?”
Show 3 vocabulary words from the passage and ask if the student knows them.
3. Differentiated Instruction Strategies
a. Content Differentiation
If reading level is below grade: Provide audio support and highlight text while reading aloud.
If reading level is above grade: Use a slightly longer passage with richer vocabulary.
b. Process Differentiation
Visual learner: Use on-screen images of park scenes.
Auditory learner: Include sound effects (birds, swings) during reading.
Kinesthetic learner: Have the student act out a scene or gesture for each new word.
c. Product Differentiation
Option 1: Draw a quick picture of the main event.
Option 2: Write 3 sentences summarizing the story.
Option 3: Record a short voice note retelling the story.
4. Lesson Flow
Warm-Up (5 min) – Vocabulary preview with images and simple definitions.
Guided Reading (10 min) – Read passage together; pause to discuss tricky words.
Comprehension Check (10 min) – Ask 3 main idea/detail questions; student answers verbally or in writing.
Creative Connection (5–10 min) – Student chooses one product option (drawing, writing, or recording).
5. Assessment & Feedback
Immediate verbal praise for effort and correct answers.
Use a simple rubric:
Main Idea: Clear / Partial / Needs Support
Details: 3 / 2 / 1 correct
Vocabulary Use: Correct / Needs Review
6. Homework / Extension
Read a short story at home and highlight 3 new words.
Share meanings in the next session.
