About Katie
I am a solo performer, actress, writer, producer and educator, and have been creating, devising, writing and performing creative work in New York City and Los Angeles since 2001. I am a Four Time National Monologue Champion, having performed four of my solo shows to ciritical acclaim and sold out Off Broadway theatres. I have also written over 60 monologues, and I teach this art form nationally. Having grown up a dancer, the discipline of my early physical training inspired my writing and devising skills, in that I so clearly understand the basis of story structure, flow, musicality and rhythm. I have been an acting, writing, improv and theatre movement instructor for the past ten years and have taught upward of 1500 students, both in the US and internationally, including international television stars and NBA/NFL players. I am also an accomplished actress and comedienne, having performed Off Broadway, regionally, and in upward of 30 comedy theatres such as the Groundlings in Los Angeles and UCB in NYC, and I have select film and television credits. Currently I have a Wayfair commercial running and an insurance print ad published.
My teaching methods create a safe space in which an artist can begin to devise their own storytelling method, no matter their level. I work with actors, writers, and other kinds of storytelling voices to help find and emphasize the truth of who someone is, and how that translates into creative work. It's one thing to have an idea of a creative piece; it's quite another to figure out what that actually means. I teach acting classes, movement, and improv classes; mostly, I emphasize the creation of telling stories through oneself, by oneself- solo performance, as it is coined- and help artists individually how to conceive and write a solo show based on their own unique instincts. Currently I teach the only Solo Performance class at Studio School, Los Angeles, and the Sidewalk Studio Theatre in Burbank, CA. UC Irvine: BA, Drama. (concealed information)
There is truly nothing better than seeing the understanding in a student's eyes of their own creative power. Like- what's better than that?! The degree to which creativity is at one's fingertips, as opposed to really dormant, like many people assume, is vast. If a student is willing to stay in an open space of learning and awareness, then I will meet them there. I have had students who have never performed in their lives completely open on a stage in front of an audience. I've had experience working with veterans as they pull from their life experiences and create safely from those new, explorative spaces. I have had people enter my class as novices, to leave as professionals. I am quite proud of that, because over each and every journey, is someone who goes from not being in the driver's seat of their own creative journey, to understanding that their personal intuition is in fact the greatest gift of all.

I always approach any of the creative process with a student by establishing that I am not there to tell the artist what to create or what to write; that already exists within them and is quite abundant. What I am there to do is to show them that it exists already, guide them to that realization, and help to shape and shift those instincts that are already completely present into malleable forms that are meant for the stage. The artist already has the very real individual gifts; I am there to help draw them out. I also establish a 'why': why are you here? Why have you been drawn to telling individual stories? Why are you interested? Why are you scared? Etc. These are very important questions, perhaps the only questions that need answering before a creative process. It's one thing to write; it's another thing to know WHY you're writing. This is something an artist needs to align with when creating. The last thing I'd say that I open up to a student is the idea of a safe space to create. Sometimes, creativity is the scariest thing in the world, because of the what if's: what if it isn't 'good?' What if someone judges me? What if I fail? And a million more. I am quite aware of- and good at- creating an environment slowly and quietly that an artist really feels that they can open up into. You simply can't create if you're too scared or too uncomfortable. It is of the utmost importance to me to create a space that is at once both safe for a student's ideas- while also being quite challenging to their artistry. I have developed this ability to do just that over years of teaching in both NYC and LA.
