About Dr Priyanka

I am a Mechanical Engineer by profession. Currently, I am pursuing my PhD in mechanical engineering at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane. I have teaching experience of 3 years and with my experience in the field of teaching, I am good at relating theories with practical aspects. I was also involved in private tutoring in India and my students have always achieved excellent results. Always available for students who are in need of help in any subjects of mechanical engineering.

About the lesson

-> Science, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, Calculus, Trigonometry and probability -> I provide Mathematics tutoring to school and university students in Australia and overseas. -> I begin with basic concepts as students seeking help would require to understand the concept from basics, then the further lecture will be followed by intensive practice in tutorials and numerical examples. -> I usually prefer quick tests to know students' understanding of the subject. -> I design my own examples in various stages of difficulty levels to help in students' understanding in addition to the textbook questions. -> I provide personal as well as group lectures. -> My teaching hours usually comprise a 20/80 proportion of theory and numerical as this methodology has been fruitful for my previous students to grab a good score. -> I prefer to use pen-paper, videos and other forms of multimedia for better understanding. -> I maintain a fun and interesting learning environment which helps students for open questions/discussions.

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Teaching was my hobby since childhood, and I made this hobby my passion. I used to teach
my younger brother and guide him with his studies. The idea of tutoring came naturally after I
had been teaching along with my studies and found it a great opportunity to spend time doing
something that I love. I find it particularly rewarding to be able to help students gain skills
which will be useful in future studies & professional career. The overwhelming positive
feedback from my students gives me a sense of satisfaction.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I am into private tutoring over the past 8 years. I have taught variety of subjects to students
studying in different grades. I started my journey by teaching mathematics and science. Being
a mechanical engineer, I am always keen to teach subjects related to mechanical engineering.
I am also interested in tutoring mathematics and science at school level. I enjoy teaching these
subjects as they are the fundamental to my engineering field. However, subject related to design
and modelling does not attract me much and I prefer to avoid teaching these subjects.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
I have had lots of wonderful teachers and they have been my role model. My mathematics
teacher in my school always motivated me and guided me on how to solve tricky problems. In my
university, my supervisor motivated me further and taught me how to work in a quick and
efficient way.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
There are several qualities that make a person a good tutor. According to me, a good tutor
is one who is patient, flexible, open to communication and self-disciplined. A good tutor
should possess a clear understanding of the subject. A good teacher to me should be able to
deliver complex topics in an exceptionally clear and lucid manner.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
I have always been involved in lots of group studies during school and university. There were
many incidents where I explained complex and specific topics to my friends in a group. This
is when I realised that I could explain complex and technical problems in a simple way.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?
During my early phase of tutoring, it was a challenge to teach as I was not aware of all the
topics related to the subject. However, with time and experience, it is now easy to review and
learn a new topic quickly. When I moved to Australia, initially I found it a bit challenging to
keep up with the course structure of Australia and other countries as I had teaching experience
from India. But I can handle it well now and learning something new each passing day.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I love teaching, and I love my research. I am passionate about the subjects I teach. It gives me
immense satisfaction when my students excel in their respective fields.
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?
I have never been super comfortable talking about myself, but I do have confidence in my
ability to teach. The experience I have gained over the last 8 years has shown me that I am truly
dedicated to my students. I can take their learning to the point that they are confident on their
own. I also think that I am fairly flexible with my approach and whether it is face to face
learning, remote teaching, or something else, I try to always make it work for the student. I
believe this truly makes me a Superprof.
