About Santiago

I am from Santa Barbara and I had the opportunity to play college basketball locally at Westmont College where I was an NAIA Div. 1 All-American. I then was able to play 10 years professionally after graduation. In that time I was able to learn and test and attempt to perfect my daily preparation as a player and majority of my years as team captain. I was able to learn from so many unbelievable coaches, players and competitors from around the world how to play and be in shape physically and mentally. I do enjoy basketball very much, it is my obsession. But I enjoy mentorship much more. I really enjoy being able to prepare and walk along side my athletes and share my years of experience as a player and team leader to help them best prepare for each day. I retired as a player recently in April of 2017. Since retirement I have been doing individual and some group training with athletes from 10 years old up to high school, college and professional. I was also an assistant coach with San Marcos HS this last season and we were able to finish 8-0 in league play and CIF-SS 2A Champions. The first CIF title for boy’s basketball in school history.

I have played basketball since I can remember and I have learned that in order to master something you have to be able to teach to others. I have always seen myself as a teacher for that reason so being a team captain and now a coach feel very natural to me.

After discussing goals for some time I like to get on the court and observe for weaknesses or inefficiencies. They can be physical or with current technique. The majority of athletes have physical imbalances whether in their ankles or hips. I’ll begin working into improving mechanics in order to be physically as efficient as possible and giving tools/exercises to maximize the movements. Long term and short term your physical health is the most important. Injured players have trouble improving daily and earning and solidifying their minutes and roll on any team when struggling with health which makes it true that, “the greatest ability is availability”.

If you work hard the right people will find you. Do your best to surround yourself with people that you admire and have a greater desire for everything and life than yourself. If you surround yourself with those people you will become like them and then better than them. We are a product of our environment and you have to take responsibility for the environment you create around you and in your mind.

I always believed since high school that I would come home someday to Santa Barbara and help win a CIF title for someone in the area. 14 years after high school I got my first opportunity to do so. It was an amazing season that started with one player likely playing college basketball after high school but most likely not NCAA Division 1. Two others possibly would play NCAA Division 3. At the end of the season we had four players sign to schools to play basketball that they all really wanted to go to. Three of them to NCAA Division 2 schools and our team, league and CIF MVP will be playing NCAA Division 1 basketball at Pepperdine University on a full athletic scholarship this fall. The games and practices were amazing but what was amazing was to see the overachievement that is now standard for them that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives especially away from basketball.
