About Gavin

I am a recent college graduate, majoring in Biology from Bates College, a small liberal arts college located in Lewiston, Maine. I graduated cum laude with a 3.8 GPA from my institution.

I recently studied for and completed the Dental Admissions Test, scoring ~98th percentile. My future goal is to matriculate into Dental School in June 2021. For this coming year, my plans were to work as a researcher in Massachusetts. However, because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, my plans have fallen through.

As a recent college graduate, I believe that I can make learning biology accessible and interesting! In college, I helped many of my friends and peers with their studies in classes such as Biochemistry and Anatomy/Physiology, and now that I have graduated, I hope to help other students in their academic endeavors! If a concept is difficult to understand or memorize, I believe I can help the student grasp and learn by providing examples, metaphors, and pneumonics that will stick with the student. I will have flexibility for my potential students and I am confident that I can help students achieve their academic goals if they work hard with me. Not only will I help students understand concepts, but I will also help them change their studying habits so that they can learn more efficiently.

-Gavin Chen

One of the most fulfilling and gratifying things for me is to share my passion for biology with other students. If we look just take a look outside of our window, we can make connections to biology -- we can see photosynthesis take place right before our eyes! If I can help a student work hard to achieve their academic goals, that will make me happy!

Throughout college, I found that many of my peers and friends came to me with questions and help with classes like Anatomy/Physiology and Organic Chemistry.  I came to realize that I enjoyed helping my peers, and I hope to share my passion of teaching with you!

Typically, before I begin helping a student, I would like to learn about their learning style and where they are at with the material. Afterwards, I would like to see where the class is in the curriculum so I can try to fill in any gaps. I believe in order to understand the entirety of the course, you must understand the basics first.

I have worked with high school and college aged students.

I can help the student learn and understand a concept and I can try to help a student memorize content.  I can also try to make material more interesting for the student. However, I cannot help a student to learn if they do not come to me with an open mindset.

Last summer, I worked at a fly-fishing camp off the grid for 10 weeks. I learned how to chop logs, build log cabins, and run generators! Beyond that, I made some life long friends!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It would be helpful if they gave me some background of what they have learned so far and what aspects of the material are confusing to the student.
