About Maria
I have a bachelors degree in biology and I minored in biochemistry at Calvin University. I worked as a tutor and a teaching assistant for biology and philosophy at Calvin. I have expertise especially in Microbiology and Immunology. I currently work at an immnobiology research assistant.
I enjoy working with students and encouraging them to get excited about the subjects I love. Helping students grow into intelligent thinkers is very satisfying and I love getting to be a part of that process.
When I was in my second year of college I was a teaching assistant for the biology class I had taken the year previous and absolutely adored it. I loved getting to share my enthusiasm for biology and scientific discovery with my students. For the rest of my time at Calvin I continued to be a teaching assistant and a tutor for biology.
I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in biochemistry from Calvin University. I was a tutor and a teaching assistant for 3 of my 4 years at Calvin, in which I helped students with various biology classes and philosophy classes.

When I start to work with a new student I need to get to know them a little bit first to assess how I can help them. Some students need a strict tutor to push them and some just need someone to just encourage them to do their best.I need to gauge what the student needs from a tutor and what their level of understanding on the subject is. I will ask them questions about the subject with varying difficulty and work from there.
I've worked with college students. I've worked with mainly students who have come to the tutoring for help, but also with a group of students who, due to their grades, were put into tutoring group sessions for extra support. It's easier to work with students who chose to be there, but it can be more satisfying to watch a student who doesn't want to be there grow in their understanding of the subject.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask themselves these types of questions: Where is my understanding lacking (a specific area of the subject? A basic foundational principle that is not fully understood?) Is there anything in specific that the teacher can do to help me? Is there something going on in my life that is preventing me from working my hardest?
