First evaluate student's knowledge on the subject and proceed accordingly. Start from the basics and reach the pinnacle,solving the hardest possible problems using the basics. Problem practice and implementation in real world, that way the subject sticks with the student,basically giving the essence and importance of the subject.
I've worked with students who used to despise the subject,yet had to study as it was mandatory for them to complete the subject thin order for them to complete their exams. Later those students ended up taking Chemistry major in college.
2020 noble prize for chemistry was awarded jointly to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna "for the development of a method for genome editing." Here itself you see importance of chemistry in day to day life and its implementation in human life.
