About Ella
I hold classes every Friday nite at 8PM, at Evolution Dance Studios, for those interested in exercising to old Soul & Funk music from the 60s, 70s, 80s. I have trademarked a dance/exercise technique called FUNKACIZE. I teach authentic Soul dances from the era, to music from the era. Recreational dances like the Boogaloo, the Pony, the Mash Potatoes, the Camel Walk, the Jerk, the Monkey, and lots of various "Bops" have been aerobicized into routines. We dance to James Brown, Rick James, Aretha Franklin, Gap Band, Prince, Temptations, Michael Jackson, Isley Brothers, etc. Good ole funky music from the good old days.
The class is specialized for older people who need to not only exercise, but have fun. I enjoy seeing the smiles on their faces after they've re-lived the past in a fun way, for only one hour. Surprisingly, sometimes they bring their kids, who also enjoy learning the dances, and hearing the music. One lady, who loves the class and has attended regularly for two years, said she received the best doctor checkup she's had in 20 years, and brought me flowers. That was most gratifying. I enjoy watching people make friends, or just come by themselves every week, because it's their thing to do on a Friday nite. I am professional Actress, and Funkacize has become a most wonderful way to connect with my fans. The first class was launched in Oct. 2014. Visit (concealed information) for details & see photos. Funkacize is recreational and is for everyone.
I was taking other dance classes with some of my favorite instructors, and became inspired to create my own. Some of my dance instructors were truly gifted and giving teachers, and I wanted to spread the same type of generous happy energy to others, that they have given to me. Plus, I wanted to create an activity for older people who are looking for something fun to do on a Friday nite. A new way to date, or bring guests from out of town.
As a performing artist, I've taken lots of various dance classes throughout my career, i.e. modern jazz, tap, cheerleading tumbler, and even a Zumba instructor. I grew up in Detroit & Chicago - the cradle of the birth of Soul music, during the 60s & 70s. I was motivated to create my own dance/exercise technique to the music that is beloved by so many. It's my own way of archiving a great culture, so I had it trademarked. This class is listed on the schedule at Evolution Dance Studios.

Class is easy follow along. I assure new students to relax and have fun. Moves are easy, and repeated a lot, so if they miss a move, they'll have time to catch it, cause they get repeated. The important task is to have fun, and keep moving. I ask them to wear two or three pair of socks, because we dance in socks. The class is a SockHop.
I work with people who are professional dancers, and people who are just looking for a fun activity to do, especially as we age. I work with older men and women, or kids say 12 years old, and up.
I encourage my students to monitor all forms of exercise and dance, to see what is right for them. I would say look into taking other classes, to see which ones fit your personal likes and needs. The music, the teacher's ability to motivate and communicate, the type of people in the class, and the price of the class, are all factors.
One of my regular students, brought me flowers saying since she started Funkacize (2 years ago), her doctor told her to keep it up. She said she received the best checkup that she had in 20 years. She's lost weight, and strengthed her arms, legs, and ankles. A lot of my students have begun to add other forms of exercise to their habits. They start back riding bikes, or hiking, or other forms of dance. It's all very healthy.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do I need special shoes? Answer: No shoes, just socks. It is a SockHop. That is the style of dance, so we dance in socks. I recommend wearing two or three pair of soft socks.
Do I need special clothes? Answer: Just workout clothing to sweat & stretch in.
Do I need prior dance experience? Answer: No, just a desire to boogey, have fun, and dance. This is recreational dancing. No skills necessary.
Do I need a partner? Answer: No. But you can bring friends anytime, and it's like a party.
