About Amy
I've been teaching all types of art for over 25 years, including public school, adult class, and art college settings. I am a mixed media textile artist specializing in heavily embellished and stitched quilted wall collages, and my art has been featured in national and international exhibits and publications. I have tutored students, both adults and children, in my home, helping them reach personal artistic goals in a range of media. I believe that creating art is a life-enriching activity that has many benefits for body and mind, and can be used to combat the stresses of every day life and even illness. I began teaching while in art college. I took one class in Art Education because I felt it was a "responsible" thing to do, not expecting to do well or like it...only to be incredibly surprised at how much I love it!
I hold a Bachelor's and Master's in Art Education and Fibers from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, and am certified for teaching grades 5-12 in public school. I have been teaching art to all ages in various settings for 25 years is many, many areas including textiles, drawing, painting, beading, stitching, mixed media, collage, sculpture, digital art, and more.

I like to talk with the student to see what they enjoy doing, and also try to pinpoint areas that I could help them grow. It is helpful but not essential that the student has created art before. If the student it new to art, I try to find a medium that they like so that that they can develop confidence.
All kinds. My private students have included people working on portfolios for art school applications, creative support and encouragement for teens with social / emotional issues, and adults who wish to explore art in a small group setting in my home. I am also hired by quilt guilds to give talks about my own artwork, and offer workshops teaching textile art techniques to these groups as well.
