About Charles
I've been teaching my students how to be a complete musician for over 20 years. I teach all genres of music. You will always work when you can play more than one genre. I bring all of my world and local touring experiences to my students. I've toured with piano legend Ramsey Lewis for the past 10 years, recorded and toured with Philip Bailey of EWF, Fantasia, Dee Dee Bridgewater and many others. I teach my students how to reinvent themselves and how to survive in the music business.
I enjoy teaching because, I feel it's my obligation to pass on what has been given to me. Most muscians learn from watching relatives or close family friends and those family friends and relatives continue the tradition of musicians. The thing that inspires me to teach the most is when my students accomplish what they feel is imposible. Nothing gives a teacher more joy and pride than watching a students thinking light bulb turn on.
My first teaching experience was teaching drums to troubled youth during my summer college breaks at a youth outreach center called New Direction. It was a great opporunity for youth to discover hidden talent and confidence they never knew they had. Music teaches you discipline and focus which can be connected to everyday life values.
Another one of my most prominent beginner teaching experiences started immediately upon me graduating college. I was asked to fill a temporary teaching position for an elementary school graduation in which turned into a perminant music teahcing experience, working with elementary and high school students in Chicago Public and Private schools for over 24 years.
My most current teaching adventure began 3 years ago when I was asked to become an adjunct professor at Columbia College and the University of Illinois ( Chicago Campus UIC) teaching drumset.
I have B.A. degree in Music Performance with a minor in Education from Shaw University located in Raleigh N.C.
I've had the fortunate experience to be mentored by Ramsey Lewis, Robert Irving III (Miles Davis music director), Von Freeman, Ken Chaney, Phillip Bailey etc. All of the names mentioned are successful musicians with incredible careers and legacies.

I initially ask students to play something of their choice so I can see where their technique and skill level starts. Then we begin with a noted exercise I created that lends itself to all genres of music and soloing. Finally I give them a rudiment and sheet music to work on that's a challenge but still fun and inspiring. All of the teaching techniques I just mentioned can build a student's confidence level once accomplished.
I've worked with students from 5 years old to 75 years old from all cultural backgrounds. I always tell my students. "While I'm teaching you, you're also teaching me."
I've also worked with young students who start unmotivated but somewhere in our journey together we find what works for that particular individual and begin to have fun learning drums and how to implement it's disciplines in everday life.
I would advise students to realize that music is life and life is music. You should enjoy what you do. The more time you spend loving what you do, the better you will become at it. If you plan to make this a career , you need to take care of the music and the business. The MUSIC BUSINESS.... One doesn't work well without the other. Always look for ways to reinvent yourself, so you can stay relevant.
One of my students at Columbia College had trouble playing an exercise that involed using all 4 lems independently. My student felt this exercise was beyond him and that he would never get it, until I gave him the ingredients to solve his dilemma. Once I show him how to slow the exercise down, relax and breathe, take it note by note and find out where each lem meet to play note together... He was able to play the exercise fluently with confidence, which show him how to solve future rhythmic equations.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about if they followed the instructions given, if they practiced the assignment given more than once or just a little, and if they tried their very very best...

I love working with Mr. Heath because he teaches you not only how to be a drummer, but how to be a musician as well. He teaches you drums always in a very musical context. He goes in-depth into all genres of music and gives the tools to become a skilled drummer in all of those styles and genres. Details
The cost for lessons are $60 per hr, $50 per 45 mins. We meet via face time or zoom once a week. Payments can be made via Zelle or Cash App weekly/biweekly/monthly.
