About Jonathan
I love reading, writing, and inspiring a passion for language in others. Whether you're trying to improve your reading and writing ability, expand your knowledge of literature, prepare for an exam, or perfect an essay, I'm here to help.
I have a Bachelor's degree in English from Indiana University, I am certified to Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), and I have been teaching and tutoring in Spain for the past two years. Outside the classroom, I have worked as a copywriter, a sports journalist, and as a featured panelist at an annual literary conference.
I have taught students of all ages and proficiency levels. I have a flexible schedule and I am prepared to tailor a lesson plan to fit to each individual student's needs.
I have always had a passion for language and have been volunteering as an a English tutor since I was in high school. When I graduated from University, I took extra classes to earn my TEFL certificate and then applied for a job in Spain as an English teacher.
I have a BA in English Language and Literature from Indiana University and I am TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) certified.
I have multiple years of experience as an English tutor and have been teaching English in Spain for nearly two years now.

I start by talking to a student about what areas they want to improve. If they want, I will sometimes have the student take a short assessment so that I can figure out their proficiency level. From this point the lessons completely depend on the schedule and goals of the student. After assessing their needs and abilities, I will design a lesson plan to help them best reach their goals.
I have worked with students of all ages. I have experience working in primary/elementary schools. I have tutored secondary school students, college students, and adults of all different proficiency levels. I've worked with students who are applying for jobs and colleges, just learning to read for the first time, preparing for exams, trying to learn a new language, etc.
English is such a fascinating and diverse subject area that can be taught in a million different ways. I would recommend that any student talk to the teacher (if possible) and make sure they are a good fit to address your specific needs and interests.
I am always excited when I hear that a student of mine just read a book that excited them or moved them. I recently had a student tell me they read "Moby Dick" over the summer and it changed their life. "Moby Dick" is one of my favorite books as well, so it was so fun to hear the student talk about all the things they loved about it. They mentioned chapters that I'd forgotten and made comments that forced me to think about the book in an entirely new way. It's always fun when I can learn something from one of my students and it's the best feeling on earth to see their passion for literature and language blossom.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do you want to learn more? Is there a specific goal (pass a test, write an essay, read War and Peace, etc.) you are trying to reach?
What about this subject area interests you the most? What about it interests you the least?
What kind of lessons or teachers have been the most helpful to you in the past?
How often do you want to work?

On average I've charged $25 an hour for one on one tutoring, but it varies depending on the specific subject area. I am extremely flexible and am always willing to negotiate.
