About Maya
Receive one-on-one tutoring in writing (essay writing, fictional writing, persuasive writing, and much more!), reading (comprehension, analysis, and learn to note what is important for future tests and essay writing), and editing (I will take you step by step to show you the best ways to edit your writing).
I enjoy seeing young students at any age or writing level, improve their writing skill set. It has always been my passion to help students become more confident in their writing and reading ability. These skills will follow you for the rest of your life! Sharpen them and learn to enjoy them. You can continuously grow and learn new things daily when you can understand what you are reading and communicate what you know effectively (These concepts start with reading and writing in school, so YES, you will be doing this the rest of your life! Might as well get as good as you can at it). Looking forward to meeting you!
My passion for English started in high school. I knew right away I wanted to be an English teacher. I taught 8th Grade English at Ensign Middle School and am currently applying for jobs that include coaching girls basketball for the fall of 2019.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Vanguared University in 2017 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in both English and Psychology. I earned my teaching credential at Concordia University Irvine in February 2019 and am currently enrolled in their Masters Program for Coaching and Exercise Science and am expected to graduate this time next year.

Writing: I would ask students to bring in samples of their writing so that I know where they need improvement. From there I would ask them what they believe needs to be a top priority. I can help them with any part of the essay writing process from organization, thesis writing, hooks, blending quotations, grammar and punctuation, and writing flow or style.
Reading: I would ask students to bring in a book they are reading currently in class. I would have them read a chapter to me out loud, this will show me where they are at in their reading ability as well as in their comprehension. Throughout the reading I will have the student pause and tell me what they know about the content (this helps with reading comprehension). I will also point out to them what is important to note and why. I can also teach students to annotate while reading. This way when they are going back to study for a test or write an essay, they do not have to start from scratch to find what is important.
Editing: Students will bring in their essay (ideally a finished product) and from the beginning we will read through it line by line. The student will tell me what could be improved. If they miss something that I think could be better, I will stop them and ask them to reread the section. This way they can practice noticing what their writing should #1. Sound like and #2. Look like. Reading essays out loud helps students recognize effective writing style and writing flow.
I have worked with middle school students all the way to college students.

Ms. Kennedy has helped me so much throughout the school year and I am so grateful I had the opportunity of learning from her!!!
Had her for a teacher for half the year and she was amazing, the whole class loved her. We all learned so much from her.
I am a graduate student currently working on my thesis. Miss Kennedy was friendly, gave timely feedback, and helped with sentence structure as well as grammar. I would highly recommend her for writing and editing!

I charge $45 an hour
Within that hour we can work on whatever the student prioritizes first!
Depending on locations I prefer to meet at a halfway point at a Starbucks if it is our first time meeting. After that we can always change our meeting spot if it is inconvenient.
