About Karan

As a journalism major studying at USC, I have a stellar command of the English language and how to use it. I'd like to pass on my writing skills to the next generation of students. I also have experience teaching through the Americorps Jumpstart Program, where I taught preschool children literacy and writing skills. Furthermore, I teach journalism to high school students at a Scholastic Press Association Workshop each year.

I have always enjoyed being a mentor to younger students. In elementary school, my teacher recognized my advanced reading and writing skills — she paired me with students who were struggling with the material more and I was able to encourage them and lead them to success. Since then, I have participated in many mentoring and teaching opportunities for students of all ages.

I have done training with Americorps Jumpstart in teaching literacy and writing skills

I have taken advanced English courses such as AP Language and Composition, AP English Literature and USC's Honors Writing Program

I like to meet with a student and develop a personal relationship with them by learning about their interests and passions before beginning the teaching process. Then, I like to use their interests to drive my lesson planning. For example, if a child particularly enjoys playing with trucks and construction equipment, I'll design my lessons to include examples and activities that involve writing about trucks and construction work.

I have worked with preschool students through the Americorps Jumpstart program, with elementary school students through the Reader Leader program at my local library, and with high school students through the California Press Association Writing Workshop.

I like to work with parents to determine a price that is fair and takes each family's unique situation into account. I do tutoring not for the money, but because I enjoy inspiring the next generation of leaders and creators, so I will also consider pricing only for the materials and resources used and offer my time and services for free.
