About Shari Ann Katlin

I am a graduate of Master of Arts in Education with a major in Special Education. I am a Special Education Teacher. I’ve taught children and individuals with special needs for seven years. I’ve also worked as an Online English tutor to Japanese professionals and young children for eight years. As a SPED teacher, I teach reading, writing, spelling, and math. I also help students enhance their self-help skills, cognitive skills, fine motor, and gross motor skills. As an Online English tutor, I teach basic grammar, reading comprehension, sentence structure, conversational English, and pronunciation. I design lesson plans that are suitable and appropriate to the student's needs and level. As an educator, it is important to guide students to help them bring out their strengths, achieve their learning goals, be confident in their skills, and overcome learning challenges.

I find joy and fulfillment in being a teacher. I believe that my purpose is to make a difference through teaching. I strongly feel that to be in the education field feels less like a job. I enjoy teaching students and learning from them. I once read an anonymous quote that says "Every child is different. They just unwrap their packages at different times." I find the quote inspiring for I believe that every individual has his or her strengths and that what makes everyone unique from one to the other. I do not doubt that when we continue to progress, thrive, and fulfill our purpose we will make this world a better place.

I was inspired by a book that I read when I was in college. The title of which is ONE CHILD by Torey L. Haden. It is a story about Torey, a SPED teacher who works closely with children with special needs, particularly those emotionally disturbed children. She has a student named Sheila who is exhibiting autistic features but is also exceptionally brilliant. Together, they developed a powerful and moving story of how a teacher like Torey can see something special in Sheila. This book made an impact on me that motivated me more to pursue a degree in Education. I wanted to be like Torey. A teacher who recognizes the strengths of her students despite their weaknesses. The second factor was my experience working with special children during my practicum. At the time, it was gratifying to experience contributing, developing, and enhancing the curriculum and instruction of special children to prepare them to be more productive members of society. Those two circumstances were strong realizations that made me choose Special Education. When I began working as a SPED Teacher, I knew in my heart that it is a job that feels less like a job. It is more of looking forward to making a difference in the lives of special children. Further, it is a kind of job that given its challenges and enormous responsibilities, in truth is fulfilling and rewarding.

I am a graduate of Master of Arts in Education (Special Education). I have 7 years of experience working as a Special Education (SPED) Teacher both one-on-one instruction and group class. I have 8 years of experience working as an online English tutor for Japanese professionals.

I want to know the learning goals of my student, target skills, expectations, and the online platform that we will be using to conduct our lessons. From there, I will create lesson plans and individualized programs for a more organized and systematic method of teaching.

Children with Special Needs: Children and Individuals with Autism, Down Syndrome, ADHD, Intellectual Disability, and Learning Disabilities

Japanese students: young professionals, college students, young children (age 5-16 years)

If you are looking for a teacher/tutor who treats her profession less like a job but more of a service with a heart and compassion, I am that teacher.

I love nature and recently my husband and I went hiking. The hike was pretty long but it was therapeutic. It's been a while since our last outdoor activity and having the opportunity to experience nature once again, helped me to get a clear head. It is good to be able to reconnect with nature to put things in perspective especially during these challenging times wherein physical, emotional, and mental health is important.
