About Allison
Welcome to my profile! I provide a warm and encouraging environment for students to make the mistakes necessary for learning an instrument and exploring their musical creativity. My passion for music has inspired me to pursue teaching and performance professionally in order to help others achieve their musical dreams.
My ultimate goal is for my students to gain all the skills necessary for creating meaningful musical experiences for themselves. Specifically I try to help them gain clean technique, a pleasing and expressive tone, basic understanding of music theory, and enough knowledge of music history to play with appropriate expression. I try to accomplish these goals by clearly explaining careful and deliberate practice techniques that remove the stress often associated with daily practice. Students will reap the benefits if they are committed to a regular practice schedule, are attentive during lessons, ask questions, and are honest with themselves about what is and is not working.
I began my teaching career in college while earning a Bachelor's in Music from Southwestern University (magna cum laude). I currently play as a soloist and with groups including AURORA: Trio for Flute, Harp, and Cello, the Shimmer Flute Choir, and Sounds of Silver Flute Quartet. I am volunteer coordinator of the Houston Flute Club and a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music in Flute from the Music Teacher's National Association.
Although classically trained I also enjoy classic rock and appreciate music from other cultures as well.
I frequently write arrangements for flute choir and other ensembles, and so I can help students who want to learn more about arranging and composition.
In addition to the flute I also have experience with the piccolo, alto, and bass flute. I love performing and I share my passion for music with my students.
I offer lessons that cover just about every aspect of playing the Western concert flute. Students can expect to become well-rounded musicians who are knowledgeable about flute technique, tone, music theory and history. I use a combination of the Rubank Method and Flute 101 books with handout supplements.
The biggest changes I've seen in my students after a few months is a better understanding of how to practice efficiently as well as improved tone. Furthermore, every year many of my students earn superior ratings of 1 on their UIL solos.
Every Spring my students and I participate in Flute Fest, a day-long celebration of all things flute, including concerts, masterclasses, and a solo and ensemble contest. A few weeks later we have our annual studio recital where everyone shows off their hard work.
I can also help students of any instrument better understand the fundamental concepts of music theory: scales, intervals, chords, part-writing, etc. Theory lessons take place at the piano to demonstrate concepts. However, students do not have to play piano to take theory lessons. I typically use a combination of the Master Theory curriculum and other handouts, unless the student is already working out of another textbook.

I enjoy sharing my love for music and my instrument with other people. It is extremely gratifying when a student becomes excited about a concept they never knew existed! I also love being able to show a practice method that turns an overwhelming obstacle into manageable chunks, taking the stress out of praciticing.
I began giving private lessons as a college sophomore. In my senior year I was hired by a local music studio to teach their flute students. By graduation I had taught several students and was prepared to start my own home studio.
I have a Bachelor's of Music Performance which included a pedagogy component. I am a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music in Flute (NCTM). I also have several year's of teaching experience from providing private lessons first as a college student, then for Georgetown Music Studio, then Cypress-Ridge High School, and now for my own private studio as well as Waller ISD and Spring Branch ISD.

I start by asking about their specific short-term and long-term goals to get an idea of what they are trying to work towards. If they are not a beginner I ask them to play something for me in order to evaluate their playing level as well as strengths and weaknesses. After that I usually recommend materials to be used during lessons and share a plan for how to proceed with future lessons.
I have worked with a wide range from nine-year-olds to retired people in their 60's. Most of my students are in public middle school and high school, but I have also taught homeschool students. I also have several adult students who wish to pursue a hobby.
Try to be specific about what you want to work on and how long you plan to take lessons. Some students are looking to commit for several years, others only have a short-term goal. Also be specific about the style of music you want to work in. If you are looking for help with jazz improv, a classical teacher may or may not be the best fit for you. The type of flute matters too. More than once I have had a student come to the first lesson with a bamboo flute (which I do not play). It does not always occur to people that you need to specify the flute if it is not a western concert instrument.
One of my 8th grade students had just competed in the UIL solo contest. When I stepped out of the room and came back, I saw his adjudication form and superior rating medal on my desk. It was a very sweet way of him telling me he had achieved the highest possible score. After that we high-fived and enjoyed his success.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1) How long do you want to play flute? Do you plan to commit for several years, or do you only want to try for a while?
2) Are you the type driven by competition, or do you prefer to play just for yourself?
3) Where does music fall in your hierarchy of priorities? Does it come before or after other activities/clubs/sports?

Per month:
$120 for 30 minute lessons
$180 for 45 minute lessons
$240 for 60 minute lessons
A La Carte:
$30 for 30 minutes
$45.00 for 45 minutes
$60 for 60 minutes
The first lesson is a free trial lesson.
I offer two tuition packages. Under the Subscription Package clients pay the price of four lessons every month regardless of the actual number of lessons attended. In months with five weeks, that fifth lesson is free and there are other opportunities for extra lessons. The chosen timeslot is permanently reserved for as long as the client pays the monthly tuition fee.
Under the A La Carte package tuition is due before the lesson. The chosen timelsot is not reserved and can be claimed by another student at anytime.
Clients never have to worry about tuition prices going up because the price is locked in at the time the studio contract is signed.
