Develop your tutoring expertise
Before you go about answering questions such as “how much do online tutors make”, you need to get the basics right. And that starts with developing expertise.
A great online tutor is an expert in their subject area, and they know it inside out. When you establish yourself as an expert in your field, students will seek out your services and tell others about you, bringing in even more students.
To become an expert in your field, start by choosing a niche. A niche is essentially a segment of a larger market that can be defined by its own unique needs, preferences, or identity. For example, if you want to teach English online, within the larger market of English teaching, you can focus more specifically on IELTS and TOEFL Examination Preparation, or Business English.
From there, you can invest in obtaining the necessary certifications and qualifications. Nowadays, you can be anywhere on the planet with an internet connection and learn on online platforms like Coursera, Udemy, Skillshare or edX.
You may also choose to find a mentor, someone who’s experienced in your industry and shares your values. Mentors can provide guidance as you continue to build your expertise. To find a mentor, consider attending relevant conferences, joining associations, or people with similar skills on LinkedIn.
Continuously share and exchange ideas with peers by, for example, creating a Mastermind group where peers meet to give each other advice and support. Regularly reflect on your work, gather feedback, and keep improving your services.
