About Jay
I can teach you slide guitar in standard, dropped - D, and open tunings. Slide Guitar is one of the best weapons to have in your arsenal! I will also show you the use of a volume pedal to simulate a steel guitar, violin, or cello.
I no longer teach beginning guitar due to it's natural reliance on visual examples of forming chords properly. Nerve damage over the years has inhibited my ability to do so in a way that I don't feel I'd be able to help the students progress in the way they deserve. That being said, if someone wants to learn how to play but is dealing with some kind of handicap or disadvantage, I can help. It doesn't matter if they were born with it, or it is due to some type of accident, everyone should be able to experience the joy of making music. I've been reinventing ways to play for 40 years now. I can help someone realize their potential to make music in spite of the hand life has dealt them.
I was a child prodigy, starting violin at 6 yrs old, bass at 11, and guitar at 12. That year (at 12 yrs old) in the 7th grade I played violin in the orchestra, bass in the jazz band, and joined my 1st rock band as the bass player. They were much older than I was but it all just came natural. I went into the studio for the 1st time when I was 16 with another band. Once again, I was the much younger bass player. By that point I was very fluent on the guitar as well. Within a year though, I began to have problems with my hands, and what had always come as second nature became very difficult. Drs had no explanation and even misdiagnosed me as having Muscular Dystrophy. When I asked if they could help me play guitar again I was told I'd be in a wheelchair soon and dead in 10 years. It took most of that 10 years to figure out how to play the guitar again with my hands the way they were. Little did I know I'd have to reinvent ways of playing several times, mostly in the last 10 years. It seems as soon as I'd get good, things would change again. Near the end of the 1st phase though I was able to record the 1st and 2nd albums with my band Chainbreak3r that showcase my guitar playing. All that hard work paid off! I was still trying to relearn when the next opportunity came to record. As slide guitar was still a strength, I focused on that. All 3 of these albums can be found on CD on my website (concealed information) and as downloads at (concealed information) There are also many videos that show how I've had to adjust over the last 15 years to continue playing my songs. Music is one of the best gifts this life has to offer. I've spent my life fighting to hang on to it!
