About Jim
I have been performing music professionally since 1977, teaching since 1986. Specializing in popular, rock, and jazz music. I play many instruments, including piano, guitar, sax, and flute, but teach primarily guitar and piano.
Every student is an individual, and we all learn a little differently, but as a general rule I try to divide my lessons in half; first the dry fundamentals of technique and theory we all must learn, then the second half devoted to a favorite popular song selected by the student. Focusing this way can help many students stay motivated to learn and practice.
My training involved a number of excellent private teachers who struggled to teach my distractable teenaged self all aspects of music performance and theory back in the 1970s. The rest of my education came on the road, singing and playing primarily guitar and keyboards with pop and rock bands in venues from Detroit to Las Vegas, New York City to Nashville, and all points in between.

First thing with online lessons is to make sure the student has a good computer system set up in a place where they will not be disturbed. It is critical that we be able to both see and hear each other well in order to effectively emulate an in-person teaching session.
Next is a friendly, informal conversation with the student to find out what they want to learn and their goals as a musician. Their lessons will be custom tailored to aid them in the journey they will find most fulfilling.
