About Tim
My teaching approach: I received my B.M.-classical guitar from Hartt in '96, but have played electric guitar since the beginning way back in '85. In my career as a professional guitarist, I've become proficient in many styles allowing me to play gigs ranging from musical theatre to classical weddings. As a teacher, I teach students about music through the style they want to learn. My aim is to make you self-sufficient. I have also written a beginning method book that teaches music fundamentals better than most of the methods out there. There is also an online component guiding students to playing songs correctly. My influences are: Segovia, Hendrix, Montgomery, Barreuco, Page, Django, Kanengeiser, Stevie Ray, Pass. The list goes on and on. You should see my CD collection! My guitar lessons take place in: The teacher's studio Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours: Monday 11am-8pm Tuesday 11am-8pm Wednesdays 11am-8pm Thursdays 11am-8pm Fridays 11am-6pm Saturdays by appointment Guitar Techniques: Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Fingerstyle, Slide Guitar, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Recording and Production, Guidance In Equipment Selection Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: In the introductory lesson, we talk about the parts of the guitar, how to get a sound, how to hold it, practice tips. Then we'll work on getting the left hand fingers to work. Before long they're playing the major scale. All in the first lesson. A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: First lesson is all about finding out what the student would like to accomplish. Then, what strengths and weaknesses the student has will determine the approach. From there, we'll talk some about, and work on technique. Find a song that helps work on these ideas. The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: Simply put, one who wants to play and is willing to practice.
My expertise as a profession musician and educator allows me to show students a variety of different styles and tailor lessons to their aspirations.
Once achieving a certain level, and the opportunity to teach became available, I found that I really enjoyed teaching and my students enjoyed learning from me.

The first step is assessment. What is their experience level: beginner, intermediate, advanced? Then, where are they with technique, theory, repertoire? Next, what are they interested in learning, and how might that be adapted to help with the above?
After 30 years of teaching, the variety of students spans the spectrum of age, ability and genres. From high level students going to college and pros, to young beginners and hobbyists, I've had nearly every kind of student.
In this digital age, meet in person. Online lessons make impossible the very thing that makes music so special. That thing is collaborative playing. You'll earn more by playing with other people than paying by yourself.
The studio had its spring recital. An 8 y/o student and I played '7 Nation Army' where I sang and played the solo to facilitate the performance. Since the kid is only 8, we hadn't worked on playing and singing yet. But one week later, this same kid sang and played the whole song. I was getting ready for the lesson and just let him play. And by the end, I realized that it's true what they say: kids will do what they see. Be mindful, and be a good example.

I find learning in the beginner and just beyond beginner class I have been taking to be very enjoyable. I have learned a lot from Tim Maynard and learning how to play has been a wonderful experience for me in a group setting. The Jam sessions and Make Music Day that I have attended have been wonderful learning experiences as well. I am very happy to have found Tim and Highland Guitar Studio.
Chapter 1. Tim has the patience of a saint, at 62 years old I finally decided to take up the guitar. I joined his "Just a beginners class" and almost thru our next "Just beyond beginners class". In this short amount of time with no musical experience at all, I have learned the basics of guitar playing and reading sheet music. I will be continuing on with further lessons. I attendeded the Hebron make music night although a little nervous it was fun. Tuesday night strum sessions are a blast. Thanks again for your time and patience.
Tim is an excellent educator and have good plan to educate kids or beginners. My started his first ever music class with Tim and he has learned a lot. Tim encourages and appreciates him more than us, which enables my son to do more practice and learn new things.... overall we are happy with the way my son is progressing
