About John
I've been teaching music lessons for 16 years and one reason my students keep coming back is because I personalize every single lesson to their own specific musical interests.
I began teaching music in Pennsylvania in 2000 until I moved to Virginia in 2003 where I taught in severa music stores until opening my own lesson studio which I ran from May of 2009- till July of 2015.
Some folks are interested in learning to read music right when they begin to play and others may be more inclined to learn some chords and get started playing the music enjoy listening to.
People's musical interests, especially with teenagers, tend to develop and change quickly and I enjoy catering to that.
Some of my students have even received college scholarships based on abilities they gained from my music lessons.
In addition to teaching music lessons, I'm also a gigging and recording musician playing many styles of music such as country, bluegrass, blues, hard rock, jazz fusion, and heavy metal.
I got started teaching music lessons at 19 as a way to begin a new career. I signed up at a local music store and was put on a waiting list for 2 months or so, but as soon as I began teaching I started to gain an awful lot of weekly students. Within a year, I had 65-70 students per week which was double the amount of any other teacher at that store and much of that success was from word of mouth amongst the elementary school and high school aged people who were the majority of my students.
My music education began when I was 7 years old learning the trombone and then clarinet. I've never not played an instrument since then. Beginning with music so young and having the benefit of two professional musicians as my parents helped me to develop my ear in such ways that I was able to teach myself other instruments.
I took snare drum lessons in the 7th grade from Aubrey Adams of the USAF Grand Ceremonial Band - the same band my parents played in.

The first thing I do at the start of a new student's lesson is ascertain what their goals, current abilities, and motivations are. Starting off lessons this way is best.
I've worked with many different kinds of people throughout 16 years of music instruction. I've taught people as young as 5 and as old as 80. I've taught students who have disabilities ranging from physical to different types of mental issues.

I started as a complete beginner and John has been great. He's very patient, caters my lessons to the music I like and is full of helpful tips. He's also just a really cool guy. I've seen both beginners and pretty accomplish players in his place. He's flexible with hours, has evenings and weekends, and is always willing to work with your schedule. I really can't say enough, grateful I found this place.
John is a great teacher. I've been screwing around with guitar for a couple of years now and he has taken it to the next level. Teaches kids and adults. Guitar and bass. He is also an expert in the history of rock as well as music theory.
Not only is John a great teacher, he's a great dude and might be the most patient person I've ever met. He makes learning fun, and playing the music you love! Great teacher, and a great guy!
