About James
I engage students with learning about their interests, their learning styles, their understanding, and goals for their studies in Earth, Atmospheric, and Environmental Sciences. I also help them with problem solving and research skills, rather than just guiding them to the answer, which they can take to any current and future class and job opportunities. I help them overcome their immediate problem or lack of conceptual understanding, and then let them study on their own.
I thoroughly enjoy helping students reach their goals for these sciences, encouraging them in their studies, relating to them with my own stories of my difficulties and successes in school, college, and my jobs. Lastly, I enjoy helping them learn problem solving and self-teaching skills, to take with them into their current and future classes, and job pursuits.
I enjoy helping students reach their potential in their classes, helping them set reasonable goals for our sessions, helping them grow in their problem solving and research skills, providing unique learning experiences for understanding the material, and helping raise the next generation of leaders and professionals for whatever field they end of wanting to pursue. I also enjoy sharing how I relate to them with the challenges they face in class and at school in general, and how they are not alone in the difficulties they face. Students need to know that their parents, families, teachers and tutors believe in them, no matter how challenging their difficulties may be. Students need to know that doing their best each day is all anyone can ask of them to do.
Having those opportunities to speak to K-8th grade students while I was a Broadcast Meteorologist, I really enjoyed engaging with the students in unique ways for each age group I worked with. I loved inspiring the students in those talks, encouraging them in their studies, and providing simple yet fun ways to help them understand meteorology and how to be safe in severe weather situtations.
Engaging students in school is the part I miss the most about being a broadcast meteorologist. Tutoring in Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences is my way of giving back to to the next generation of students and future professionals.
I have earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Atmospheric Sciences/Meteorology, and a minor in Environmental Sciences at North Carolina State Univeristy (NCSU). I worked as a Broadcast Meteorologist for two and a half years for an independent television station and an NBC television station. During my NBC TV job, I presented, engaged and addressed classes of several hundred students in elementary and middle school grades, about weather, severe weather safety, and encouraging them in their studies. And now, I am working as a consultant for college students, faculty and others studying and using Geospatial Information Sciences at NCSU, which is similar to being a tutor.

I start off by getting to know them--what their interests and hobbies are, what do they like to do for fun at school and outside of school.
Then, I ask them what school subjects they enjoy, what subjects they are having difficult with, what they understand in the subject(s) I'm helping them with, and what they are having difficulty understanding in that subject(s).
Then, I ask them, what is one goal they would like to accomplish today.

Details
I typically charge $40 per hour for K-12 students, and $50 per hour for college students.
For two or more hour sessions per week, I provide a $5 discount per one hour session. For example, for two one hour sessions per week for K-12 students, I would charge $25 per one hour session.
