About Richard
As a recent graduate of the New York City public school system, the formats for AP and Regents courses are still fresh in my mind. What I lack in a degree I make up for in years of self study and a hunger for knowledge. When I am presented with a piece of information, I question it and make independent inquiries into what exactly happened. I do this by looking at primary and secondary sources from every possible point of view I can. As a musician, I often like to do that by looking at art and music made during or depicting the time. I hope you choose my service and I look forward to working with you!
History is boring. It’s something we’ve all heard before. It’s something that gets perpetuated in media and culture all the time. The apathetic “why are we learning about these guys who have been dead for hundreds of years” mentality has become ingrained the the popular culture of America. But why do we think that? Well why don’t you imagine for a second, what you think a history teacher looks like. Are you done? Is it a boring 70 year old guy sitting behind a desk trying to get you to memorize dates like when the Ottomans conquered Constantinople (1453) or when did the Meiji Restoration happen (1868) or when did the Battle of Waterloo happen (1815) or when did ABBA write the song Waterloo (1974). We’ve all been there at one point. Boring man regurgitates facts and puts you to sleep for an hour. But history is so much more than that. It’s our story. Each and every one of us. It’s dirty and it’s bloody and it’s depressing but it’s us. But for as many terrible and depressing things that have happened throughout our story there are just as many beautiful stories of good deeds and great people. History is a narrative and if you treat it as one in can cease to be boring in an instant.
As I said before, I helped my brothers with homework and test prep all through their school careers and into the present. I also tutored AP world history in high school at the request of my then teacher.
Although not a formal education, I have been tutoring since a very young age for my younger brothers. My parents worked a lot growing up so I often had to fill the role of helping the kids with their homework and studying for tests. I come from a family of teachers and have watched my grandmother and mother help students immensely and I want to do the same.

When I'm working with a new student I like to get to know their interests. If I can do that, I can gear my lessons keeping them in mind and revolve it around something that will keep them engaged. Because I'm only 20 I find it generally very easy to get along with my students because of our age proximity and I want to feel less like a teacher to them and more like someone who's just giving them knowledge that will help them through life.
I have worked with students of all ages and coming from all backgrounds. I have also worked with students with ADD and ADHD.
I would say find someone who makes you excited about the topic. All of my favorite teachers made me want to learn and made me want to come to class and I hope everyone had that experience at least once in their life.
A recent event I am very interested is the Refugee crisis in Cyprus and the conflict between Greece and Turkey because of it. I wouldn't exactly say "fond" of considering it is a crisis but I do find it very interesting.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I suggest thinking about what exactly you're looking for. Is it test prep? General knowledge? Or maybe you're failing the class and you need extra assistence. The most important thing is to be honest with your teacher. There shouldn't be any judgement ont their part no matter what yours situation is and they need to know what exactly you need help with.

I generally try to keep my rate on the lower side due to my lack of a college degree at the moment and I am willing to negotiate on a student to student basis.
