About Nathaniel
I have been speaking Japanese for about 5 years, and I am just past the JLPT N3 level. Definitely conversational in Japanese.
I have about a year of experience in beginner level Japanese tutoring, as I have tutored at the high school and college levels.
If you are willing to learn the writing systems and put in the effort, I can get you speaking in a short time. Let's enjoy learning Japanese!
I enjoy being able to teach others the beautiful language of Japanese! I have had a passion for teaching many subjects since I was young, and now, I am excited to have the opportunity to see people grow in their Japanese language knowledge. Because I am almost-entirely self-studied, I understand the frustration and confusion that students experience when deciding to take on Japanese. In my learning, I scoured the internet for accessible and free learning materials, and I have ultimately collected all of of that knowledge, which I can now pour into students!
I am an organizer of a weekly Japanese conversation group, and as I noticed that some people wanted help with learning Japanese outside of the group, I began lending a hand. I also tutored students in Japanese 101 at Harold Washington College, and I am willing to tutor students in Japanese 101 and 102. My interest continued growing, and I would like to tutor as employment at this point.
I have Japanese language education beyond the Japanese Language Proficiency Test N3 level, and I have been tutoring at the high school and college level for about a year now.

We will dive directly into learning Japanese vocabulary and basic grammar, but at the same time, the student will be expected to study two of the basic writing systems (hiragana and katakana) on their own for the first few weeks. This will allow the student to write what they are learning, but it will eliminate any blockage from learning applicable vocabulary.
I mostly work with beginning and lower-intermediate students (JLPT N5 or N4). These students are generally still learning to build effective sentences and have conversations. Some of my students did, however, have prior knowledge of Japanese, so the range of skills was from absolute beginners (no knowledge whatsoever) to basic conversational level.
Hiring a Japanese tutor is not necessarily about the teacher being fluent in Japanese in every area, but about them understanding what you need. I focus on beginners because I was at the point where I needed to get past JLPT N5, N4, and N3 level. As a self-studied and applied Japanese learner, I have gathered many resources that will be useful to my students, and I understand the difficulty of learning Japanese without guidance. You should look for a teacher who understands where you are and how to get past hindrances.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do you want to learn Japanese?
How far do you want to take your Japanese learning?
Do you want to apply it in real life conversation, or just watch anime?
Do you speak any other languages that will help you learn Japanese? (Korean, Chinese)
Are you willing to put in the work to study Japanese? (It should become a daily part of your life)

This is the first that I have charged for my services, because I was part of a volunteer program; however, I am setting my minimum at around $15/hour. Ultimately, the wage is negotiable, but if there are specific needs a student has that would call for compensation, then it could be discussed.
