About Michael
Shuto Karate Club was Philadelphia's first karate school (1960). At our Sellersville location, we combine the techniques and teaching methods of traditional Japanese karate, with instruction focused on the knowledge, skills, and mindset required for self-protection. This type of training allows our students to be more physically and mentally fit and confident in their ability to protect themselves and loved ones if the need arises. Children, especially, learn courtesy, self-respect, and self-discipline.
I like the challenge of approaching each student as an individual, and the satisfaction of knowing I am helping people to realize their own power and to challenge their own weak points. "Old school" Japanese karate as I originally learned it in the 1980s was one-size-fits-all, but this does not suit its modern purposes in teaching highly different individuals the skills and mindsets that will help them in their daily lives and keep them more protected from harm than they'd otherwise be. There is a great depth to the combat knowledge that the original Okinawan masters encoded in their karate practice, which was passed to the Japanese and from the Japanese was given to the world. The process of uncovering what was hidden or temporarily lost regarding self-defense is a enjoyable process of discovery.
Instructing comes to me naturally. and I first started teaching karate to students at a Night High School in Yokohama, Japan where I was working as an English teacher (mid 1990s).
I joined Shuto Karate Club (then in Hatfield) in 2009 and soon after that the Sensei of the school, Robert Trotta, recognizing my thorough knowledge of Shotokan karate and ability to convey it to others, started to allow me to assist with instructing. In about 2013 he "gave" me Saturdays, where I taught both the children's and adult's classes each week. To make a long story short, he opened a school in Kutztown and a short time later we moved the Hatfield club to Sellersville, in the summer of 2017. By then I was teaching even more classes. He turned the school over to me in April of 2018 and I have been the head instructor ever since.
I have trained for 25 years in the Japanese martial arts and spent three years in Japan doing karate -- earning my 2nd degree black belt there. I have a 4th degree black belt and teacher's certificate with the American Self Defense Karate Association and with Shuto Karate Club. I have been teaching with this school for about 10 years and in April 2018 I assumed ownership and leadership of the Sellersville club.
In the 1990s, I practiced aikido and earned a brown belt from the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU), and I bring that knowledge to my teaching. I have extensive knowledge of karate's history and principles, self-defense law, and the physical and mental aspects of self-protection.

It all depends on the age of the student and what kind of previous experience, if any, they have. How you start can vary pretty widely. If they are joining our regular classes, I have all the other students introduce themselves. I or another instructor will generally work one-on-one for the first few classes to bring them up to speed. Then at some point after that, we will begin to incorporate them into the regular class flow.
We give them lots of positive feedback to recognize the first little steps of progress. We demonstrate that we have the patience to bring them along.
We also have a "mentoring" philosophy whereby all students learn how to teach others. So, pretty soon we will be assigning our older students to work with the new one.
The youngest student has been 5 and the oldest has been in his 70s. There are widely varying levels of aptitude and enthusiasm. There have been some naturally gifted athletes, and there have been some others who are immediately "hooked" on karate. Most students don't fall into either of these categories, and so using patience as students try to master what are very complex movements that don't come naturally, and finding ways to motivate those who aren't naturally motivated, are two of the biggest challenges and provide the most rewarding opportunities for the sensei.
You really have to find a way to reach eash student as an individual.
There should first and foremost be a positive personal connection. But the most important thing for you (student) is to communicate what you are expecting to get out of the lessons. Look for a teacher who asks you about that. He or she should be enthusiastic about their martial art and their "lineage", and be able to talk about the history of their martial art and their particular school, and explain the relevance to our modern society of what they teach.
One of my best achievements so far was our school's karate demonstration at Sellersville's Gallery of the Arts (festival) in September 2018. We prepared for this for several months, and almost everyone was able to participate. Every child and adult brought their best game and we gave a "stellar" performance under the blazing afternoon sun. We were immediately invited to give an encore presentation at this year's festival (September 15).
[Update: We did an even better performance at the 2019 Gallery of the Arts on Sep. 15! See these blog posts: (concealed information) and (concealed information) ]
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The following apply to yourself or your child or children:
1. What are my goals -- physical fitness, mental sharpness, self-discipline, better ability to protect myself? (We have a good section on our website on the Benefits of Karate -- look for the links on the home page.)
2. What kind of commitment am I willing to make? How often can I attend class?
3. Do I like a high level of formality or "ritual" in the dojo, or am I more comfortable with a casual setting?
4. Do I have any physical or mental limitations that might restrict my practice?
5. Do I like or want to have "competition" be a part of my training experience?
6. How much emphasis do I want placed on realistic self-defense, as opposed to the physical fitness or sport aspects of karate?

Constant care and tutelage is given to each and every student during each and every class.
This is a place where you are known and cared for; you’re not a number but part of a community. The sensei is kind in his teaching. There’s no yelling or intimidation. Respect for the sport, yourself and others is taught. It’s very affordable. We’ve been there for several years and love it!
Every student is shown individual attention, and everyone helps each other out. Students helping students
I trained here for 6 years and I honestly loved every part of it! I've never experienced another club like Shuto Karate; they have such an incredible sense of community and they are extremely welcome to everyone who walks through their door. The instructors hold you to a standard that really helps to improve your skill and teach you more each week, and you are surrounded by teachers and students who are truly dedicated to Karate. It is so refreshing to see such a passion for the legacy of Karate and the usefulness of the self-defense you learn. What really attracted me about the club is how they taught not only how to improve your physical strength, but also your inner strength. They taught Karate as a way of life and I discovered many important life lessons by training there. I have met some of my very best friends at the club, and so I highly recommend Shuto Karate Club to anybody who is interested in learning self-defense in an incomparable community, no matter your age or experience.
I love everything about Shuto Karate Club. The instructors were so patient with me and encouraged hard work and leadership. It was more than just karate for me, it was part of my lifestyle. I also enjoyed the lineage and historical aspects of this club because that type of heritage is scarce these days.
I trained at this school for almost a full decade when I was younger. I enjoyed my experience wholeheartedly. Shuto Karate Club places an emphasis on the lifelong practice and application of karate. The senseis at Shuto Karate Club encourage students young and old to pursue excellence in their training, which I appreciate. The adherence to traditional Shotohan karate during my time at the dojo was a form of structure which made learning karate as a younger person much more enjoyable.
I would recommend Shuto Karate Club to anyone who wants to develop a skill and lifestyle choice that will benefit them for the rest of their life. Our family loved the traditional environment at Shuto Karate Club. Our children had to work for their belt rank in a positive and uplifting environment, but nothing was handed to them. In an age where everyone is given a participation trophy, we valued the hard work and level of skill that was required for our children to progress to the next level. I cannot say enough about the practical self defense taught weekly at Shuto karate club! We are so thankful for our years with them when we lived in PA.
I took adult classes through Shuto karate club for many years, and my three sons participated in the children's program as well. We found that it was a family-oriented dojo that helped our boys develop character traits such as self-control and respect while also learning traditional Japanese karate. They progressed all the way to junior black belt in the program. I also benefited greatly from the practical and patient instruction of the senseis and have gone on to achieve my black belt myself.
What I enjoy most about the club is, the way traditional Shotokan Karate is honored and then the principles and techniques are applied to modern day self defense. There is also an environment of learning and questioning to improve ones knowledge base.
I enjoy the approach of honoring traditional Shotokan karate while applying it to modern self defense. The environment is one of inclusion and the fostering of questions to encourage exploration and learning.
Our daughter has been going to Shuto Karate Club of Sellersville for two and half years and we are extremely happy with her training in Shotokan Karate under Sensei Michael. We would recommend this Karate club and the instructor to everyone.
Inclusive, family friendly environment. The instructor makes students and their families feel very welcomed. He creates a very inclusive environment. Visitors/guests are always treated as if they are members.
Patience. There is only encouragement and praise for the students. Each student works at his/her pace and they feel excited to master next steps in their training without pushing them. This approach has worked very well for our son. Our instructor is very personal and knows and understands his students very well.
Communication and Professionalism. The communication is excellent. We receive continuous updates, opportunities/advancement for our child and valuable resources to learn more about karate history and present day techniques and rules. It is a very well run, professional karate club.
I have trained with Sensei Lapreziosa for 7 years. He was instrumental in getting me to the level of black belt. His technical knowledge is at the highest level. He infuses the Japanese culture into the dojo. His current focus of holistic self defense is novel and practical. The students and teachers are not just great martial artists but great people,. They and their families provide a special and supportive environment . I am very fortunate and grateful to be associated with the Shuto Karate Club.
