About Jerry
Hello! I am Jerry, a college student at the University of Pennsylvania currently studying mathematics and anticipating a bachelor’s degree in 2027. I previously took and excelled in courses ranging from pre-algebra in middle school to multivariable calculus and linear algebra in high school and college, and I wish to help others to succeed in math, regardless of age or ability. I have tutored part-time online since I was a junior in high school (about two years), focusing particularly on small groups of about 3 to 6 middle- and high-school-aged students and teaching various branches of math such as algebra, geometry, and preparation for math competitions. I have also previously tutored one on one as a freelance tutor on other online platforms, such as Fiverr.
At the beginning of each lesson, I Iay out objectives either verbally or in writing in order to organize the lesson. I would ask students to be specific on what they want from each lesson and ideally give me either materials or an idea of what concepts I need to prepare. This allows me to adjust any lesson plans of mine before the session.
During the lesson, I tend to rely on visuals and use a whiteboard in order to show my work and highlight important ideas. Writing things out in math helps with organizing thoughts and thus allows my lessons to be more coherent. According to previous students, I also tend to be more effective at introducing new concepts when writing out and solving example problems during the lesson.
The lesson overall tends to follow the previously laid-out goals quite closely. Not only does this allow me to cover everything we need to in a session, but I also do this to focus on key points and takeaways for the student, such as important theorems and strategies for solving more difficult problems. Participation is an important element in my classes, and I regularly engage with students by periodically asking review questions and including exercises to reinforce learned concepts.
