About Julie
I am a current Chemistry Ph.D. student at the University of Chicago and have a B.A. in Chemistry from Scripps College.
Since I was in high school I've been tutoring my peers and other students in STEM subjects, primarily in college-level General Chemistry courses. I have worked for various colleges as a private and departmental tutor, and at UofC I have worked as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the Honors General Chemistry course during the 2019-2020 academic year. From such experiences, I have a very comprehensive understanding of how Gen Chem is taught in universities and have developed my own materials to assist students through the coursework.
I really enjoy teaching, particularly the moment where something in the student just clicks and they understand a concept they've really been working on. Since these topics don't come easily to everyone, I think a personalized approach is the best method. I often use analogies in my lectures and descriptions to try and make the material more accessible and relatable.
I started teaching from a pretty young age. I have been involved with science education outreach programs since 2005, where I would volunteer at science fairs and festivals to work activity booths to introduce others to scientific concepts in a fun environment. I found that I really like guiding others to a better understanding of STEM.

When working with a new student, I first talk through a few concepts with them to see what their level of understanding is. I ask them what topics they feel most comfortable and most uncomfortable with in order to gauge where their strengths lie so that we can have a specific plan for improving their understanding.
I have worked with students in middle school through university levels.

She is wonderful to work with, always pushes you to find the answer instead of telling it herself.
Julie was the most incredible tutor ever! She was so patient and understanding and I always came out of our tutoring sessions feeling so much more confident. She don’t just help you understand the difficult concepts, she also works on test taking and prep strategies to help you get the best results possible. I genuinely don’t think I could have gotten my A in gen chem without her!!
Julie gives great practice problems and publishes detailed keys for them later which are extremely helpful. She is also very good at answering questions and follows up whenever she has a correction. Lastly, she grades things extremely fast which is always appreciated.
