About McKayla
Many people who struggle with math do so in part because they have never been taught the subject in a relatable manner. It is hard to learn something when it feels like you have to be Einstein to solve every problem, or if it feel total arbitrary. I stand out because it's my goal to make math feel fun and translate it into something real for my students. I come from a very diverse background and have tutored students who have all been very different.
I enjoy being a math tutor because I'm a huge geek and love to see others succeed. I find it so disheartening that some people think they just aren't a math person, when really they just haven't found the right teacher to explain things. I love seeing students gain their confidence and I have never had a student walk away with "just a passing grade." I have tutored elementary students all the way up to college math courses and my biggest joy is working one on one to see personal growth. Although I've taught large after school engineering courses to middle school students and worked as a TA in a lab, I found my one on one tutoring to inspire myself to be better.

When I start working with a student I like to ask them to show me what they've been learning and some past assignments they've had and talk me through what happened. I find that active dialog helps me to know what they do and don't understand. Sometimes the solution is as simple as they really didn't get why something was happening in a previous lesson. Then we'll work on a current lesson and go from there. My process is always molded to each individual student, because often the problems with their normal schooling is that the one size fits all lesson just doesn't fit them.
