About Jonathan
I love to tutor Mathematics.
I’ve always had a natural understanding of Mathematics, one that both helped me to excel and also to help others. I started tutoring my younger brother while in an accelerated math program at the University of Minnesota as a 7th and 8th grader. I tutored other students throughout High School. I was accepted to Stanford as a Math/Physics double major and continued to tutor in the Bay Area. Even after graduating from Stanford and starting a software company in San Francisco, I occasionally found the time to tutor. Then I decided to join the Marine Corps and I found myself as the go-to Math tutor for my fellow Marines as they worked on their own professional development. Now, after finishing my MBA at The Carlson School of Business, moving back to California to start a family, and starting my own business once again, I am still tutoring. I don’t think I will ever stop tutoring.

I have always enjoyed math. Thinking about problems, solving problems, and explaining solutions are fulfilling on their own. Being able to also help others learn how to solve problems is such a blessing, I am so thankful to have the background and experience to be able to be a teacher of mathematics.
I was originally a Math/Physics double-major at Stanford before a very beloved mentor saw that my hungry mind needed something less defined. I wound up loving Psychology and my focus was on human senses and learning. I studied human intelligence on many levels, including how we measure intelligence, how we learn, and how we develop. I continued to love math even though it wasn't my focus and wound up getting my MBA later on. I have formal education in both classroom mathematics as well as applied mathematics in a number of fields.

The first step to every new student is first self-assessment by the student. Often students are very aware of their own challenges. This usually takes a few minutes.
The second step is to assess the student practically as a teacher. This takes place during the process of tutoring in the first and second sessions. I first evaluate how well a student performs certain basic skills. Students often struggle when they try to tackle problems without first mastering the required basic skills like division and multiplication. I then see which kinds of problems they struggle with in order to help target future tutoring sessions to those types (word problems, proofs, etc.).
