About Dawson
I am junior at Columbia University studying Computer Science and Anthropology and am planning on pursuing graduate studies in STS (science technology and society). Studying these two disciplines has exposed me to different ways of thinking and the bridges between them– it has also sparked my interest in making math and technology engaging to a variety of student types and interests.
As a student much of my success in mathematics was founded upon a love for the subject– and looking back this love was rooted in the joy of connecting old and new ideas, new concepts back to fundamental principles (e.g. the derivative is "slope" on more than just lines). Often times it seems that in learning math students are bombarded with more and more details, problems, and concepts without an overarching understanding of how they relate to each-other. For this reason my approach is focused on having students build an intuition for how different ideas in mathematics connect so that they more fluidly utilize their knowledge when approaching new material.
