About Joshua
Having a background in engineering, i am able to apply academic knowledge with practicial, hands-on experience, with mathematics and physics. For this reason, I can easily draw parallels between academia and real life, providing more realistic examples to my students and helping them better understand the usefulness of what they are learning.
I came from a blue-collar background, and was fortunate to be the first in my family to attend college. From first hand experience, i know the importance of an education and how it can personally change a persons life. Not everyone is as lucky as me and able to change their circumstances; tutoring is a way for me to give back to my community while also maintaining my knowledge level on basic mathematics and physics.
I started tutoring mathematics and physics in college to make extra money. I worked within the library and was readily available for any walk-ins for any topics in mathematics and physics. This helped keep me on my toes. I was also able to earn a certification in tutoring during this time. After college i tutored mathematics and physics to save extra money.
I have a background in mechanical engineering, and an MBA. As an engineer, i worked at NASA for several years, and have had the ability to merge academic knowledge with practical experience. Becuase of this experience, i am often able to use real world examples to better illustrate concepts.

Typically I spend the first 10-15 minutes understanding the students personality, as well as what they are having most difficulty with, be it time management (for test taking) or a difficulty with grasping fundamental concepts.
Often i will have the student walk me through their process for solving a problem, specifically a problem that they might have gotten incorrect, so that i can better understand their thought process. Generally, a student is having issue with a single concept, once that concept is better explained, practiced, and understood, their issue is generally cleared up quite quickly.
Most of my experience is with college students; however, i have tutored students as young as 12 and as old as 55. I have experience with all genders, ages, and walks of life.

I had to take a general knowledge test which included a lot of math for my teaching certification. Some trigonometry, algebra 2, and a little pre calculus. I’ve not sat in a math class for over 10 years. My first attempt of the test was a fail. With Josh’s help and a lot of patience, I was able to pass and get my teaching certification.
Joshua was extremely intelligent regarding his Math skills. He was able to help my son with his Algebra, calculus and mathematical physics; some of this stuff I had never heard of and we were desperate to get help for our son.
In addition to Joshua’s skills regarding Mathematics he was always prompt, thorough and would always coach and explain the theory and reasoning as he was teaching.
I honestly attribute my son’s ability to passing his classes to Joshua; an amazing young man with manners and brains!

Details
Generally, my base pay is roughly $30-$40/hour, depending on the subject and its difficulty. If i am tutoring more than one person at a time, i charge the same price minus $10 per addition person (For example, if i am tutoring 3 people, i would charge $40 + $30 per each person, for a total of $100/hour for all three together). If i have to drive i tend to tack on another $10/hour for gas money.
