About Katrina
I focus on figuring out why you are having trouble and finding new and memorable ways to explain the material that you will understand. Humorous explainations keep a tutoring session fun, which reduces frustration and helps the student remember what we discussed during tests and quizzes. I'm a PhD candidate with extensive experience in math from the basics through graduate level econometrics and differential equations.
I enjoy seeing my tutorees improvements in ability and especially confidence. There is nothing better than giving someone a strong foundation and enough confidence to work through new problems and concepts on their own.
I didn't have a teaching assistant (TA) position when I started my graduate journey but I badly wanted to teach. I got my first experience by asking professors to take me on as a volunteer TA, be my mentor and let me lead a few lessons once I showed ability. This paid off and I voluteer TA'd a couple classes and led a few lessons. This experience introduced me to a wide variety of students and learning styles.
I'm currently a PhD candidate. During the course of my graduate studies I have been a TA for multiple courses and taught several lectures and worked with students. I've tutored fellow grad students through econometrics courses when word spread from my study group was that could teach the course material effectively.

A new student should send a copy of their syllabus and some recent work they are struggling with ahead of time so I can prepare materials. At the first session, I ask about their strengths, where they are struggling and what they want to get out of our time together. Then I'll have the student do a problem from just before they get stuck and talk me through what they are doing and why. I find it is often the case that people learn math by rote, able to reproduce the process of solving particular problems without really understanding the why of what they are doing and this leads to trouble as math becomes more complicated and builds on previous lessons. Once I know where the student is, we can start filling in understanding of the procedures and critical thinking skills needed to thrive in mathematical subjects and become a lifelong independent learner.
