About Ashley
I have spent the last 10 years in education. I have taught in classrooms, managed tutoring programs, directed after school enrichment classes, and written and edited curriculum for online educational programs.
My areas of speciality include:

I enjoy engagaing with students. I love finding ways to pursue students' interests and skills. I enjoy finding connections between their studies and the real world.
I got started in teaching when I graduated college. I accepted a job at a neighborhood association and elementary school through AmeriCorps. I fell in love working with students and families. I realized that in many communities after school programs and resources are essential to a well rounded education. I spent the next 10 years working in classroom instruction and in after school programs working to provide tutoring, enrichment, and supplemental learning opportunities.
I have a degree in English and Rhetoric from the University of Illinois
I have been trained in Common Core Math instruction, RtI interventions, guided reading instruction, online tutoring training, behavior management training, at-risk and low income population training

When I work with a new student, I like to first talk to parents and figure out their needs. Then, I like to have a conversation with the student to determine their learning style and where they are academically.
K-3rd: guided reading
3rd-5th: math intervention and common core instruction
6th-8th: after school tutoring and mentoring; math, STEM, ELA, reading intervention, social studies, enrichment classes
K-8th: after school programs and summer camps providing tutoring and enrichment activities
K-8th: substitute teaching
My advice is to find a tutor that understands your learning style. For example, my learning style is through visuals. I learn best when there are lots of pictures, diagrams, whiteboard sharing. Also, you want to find a tutor who will make learning fun and engaging!
Road trips, camping, hiking, and rock climbing are my favorite hobbies. Recently, I took my 11 year old stepdaughter on a road trip through Colorado and Utah and visited 4 National Parks. Before the trip, I had created scavenger hunts and activities for my stepdaughter. We had so much fun completing them everywhere we went! When she got back to school, she even shared everything she learned with a school project.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do I need help with? Math? Can I be more specific, like fractions, division, finding area, etc?
How do I want to learn? Through video chatting, text chatting, shared google docs, websites? What are my skills in using technology?
How often do I want to work with my tutor? How long should a session be?
