About Polly
I've found in my 20 years of teaching (in and out of the public schools) that the expectations vary from person to person as to what they would like to achieve from an art class.
It's important to me that my students are receiving the type of instruction suited for their individual needs. Also, I've found that self-speak is a large reason, as to why people grow (or wither) in a particular path of expression.
Focusing on the present moment, positive self talk and the building of specific skills is the the primary goal of each class. I focus on process rather than product. The experience of the process; obsticals and accomplishments are addressed and are often a part of the discussion. Growth is achieved where there is enjoyment in the activity.
I enjoy working with art, people and problem solving. As a teacher, I have the wonderful opportunity to do all three.
There is something magical in my opinion to creating paintings. Whether the artist decides to create an image that is fantasy, abstract or realistic; seeing an idea materialize before you can be very exciting!

I started out in graphic design and found that this was not a good direction for me. As I made this decision, serindipity came to play as I passed the art education department. I immediatly walked inside and exclaimed "I want to be an art teacher!"
I have always been drawn to create, I love to paint, draw, work in clay, sew... if it involves creativity, I enjoy doing it!
I am a certified art teacher and have a masters degree in art. I also am a certified yoga teacher.

When working with a new student, I genrally like to get to know what type of experience they have with the medium and what they would like to accomplish in the class. Getting to know what they are excited about learning and what types of obsticals that may be encountered is also important so we can get the most out of each session.
During my time in the public schools I came across individuals of a variety of needs and abilities.. I worked with 1st grade through 8th Grade for 10 years and high school for four years.
I currently work with college students teaching on-line through Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.
I would advise a student looking to hire a painting instructor to interview the teacher. Asking questions such as; "What is an important part of your instruction?", "What (in their opinion) is fundimental in learning to paint?"
I would ask them if they have a favorite style of painting, and what specific types of skills they would be teaching.
I volunteer for the Donker Farm. Recently, I have been a part of organizing the "Donker Farm and Arts Festival". During this event I do a Yoga class as well as do a pottery demonstration. A paint station and a plein air painting is also an integral part of this event.
I really enjoyed organizing and being involved with the event at the capasity that I am.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some questions that a student will want to consider are;
1. What Type of painting are you interested in doing? (i.e. realism, abstract, fantasy)
2. Experience with color, what do you know? What do you want to learn?
3. What kind of learner are you, (Your instuctional needs from the teacher.)
