About Julián
Teaching has always been a part of my life, from the youngest ages that my memory serves me I can always recollect helping out classmates having trouble and being the second-in-command if the teacher needed help explaining something (I know, teacher's pet...sigh).
Since I have been pursuing a career in performance I haven't had much time to start a studio and have only given lessons to friends in my school who have asked me for them or whom I have suggested would benefit from them. The pandemic has taken much away, but it also has added more time to my schedule and I wish to use it to start up a small studio.
I have studied Piano performance at Depaul University in Chicago with George Vatchnadze and am currently studying at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore with Marian Hahn.

What would first help me begin the process with a new student is an understanding of the student's history with music: their first inspiration, the role music has in their life, and whether they have had any prior instruction. From there I can best understand where they are coming from.
And the second thing would be to understand what their goals are for the future, from the most miniscule to the grandest. I would best be able to teach if I knew what growth they would most want to see in themselves.
I've worked with a wide variety of experience levels. I would try to accomodate any needs that would help a student's learning experience.
Decide on a teacher based on your own expectations and not theirs. When both align, I believe a good relationship can begin to grow from it.
Just before the pandemic hit I played in my first real jazz combo. Such fun! I love improvising and am working towards my goal of finding an identity within musical improvisation.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
As a student I know I can work out my ideas alone, but I also know that some ideas are best worked out with others. It helps me a lot to ask questions and talk about ideas that I may have even if they aren't well formed.

It is hard to not be engaged when Julián is your teacher. That is the benefit of taking lessons with him. When I started with Julián I had mainly approached the piano by learning chords, scales, and songs. I had made progress but I knew that I wasn’t close to replicating the touch I wanted. After 1 hour with Julián I could clearly see the path I needed to take to achieve the level of technique he and other great pianists posses. He is also not just a great pianist but an overall great musician. He is thoughtful and knowledgeable about many different musical concepts like improvisation, music theory, and music history. If you are really serious about becoming a better pianist or if you need to take your first steps at the piano I highly recommend Julián.
