About Jim
I have a B.A. from U.C. Berkeley and an M.A. in Music from San Jose State University. I have taught piano and music theory for many years, and have been certified to teach A.P. Music Theory to students who want to take the A.P. Music Theory Exam to get college credit. I also have many years of jazz study with some of the top jazz pianists in the country!

I want to build on whatever you know about piano and music theory. If you're brand new to piano, I will orient you to the piano from scratch and teach you how to find your way around the piano and connect notes on the piano to written music notes. I usually start students using a method book and a routine involving scales that allows you to learn where melodies and chords come from. The method books I use teach you all that you need to become not just a pianist, but a knowledgable musician.

I like the way we go over my pieces and figure out what is actually going on in them, because it helps me understand more about music and what I can improve on.
Along with teaching piano, Mr. Regin is adept at teaching important ear training and sight reading skills that have been key to my development as a student. He is very good at providing a good base with fundamentals and developing into more advanced and challenging concepts. He does so in a kind and encouraging way.
Mr. Regin has been our son’s teacher for a little over four years now. He mentored our son from his very beginnings as a pianist in 7th Grade. Mr. Regin was and is incredible. He is very patient and yet demanding of our son. Over the four years, he increased the complexity of Zachary’s lesson, preparing him for many sight reading auditions and school competitions. I can tell that Mr. Regin truly loves to teach and see his students succeed. More than once, he went over and beyond his “scheduled” time to make sure Zach felt comfortable with a new idea, or if he needed a little extra coaching.
Under his tutelage, Zachary grew very quickly, making it into prestigious summer camps like BUTI Tanglewood at 14. He cares about every aspect of our son’s musical education. Last year, Mr. Regin helped Zachary prepare and get acceptance letters to two prestigious Music School, the Indiana University Jacob school of Music and the Denver University Lamont School of Music. Thanks to his teaching, Zach scored a 98% on his music theory placement test at Oberlin Conservatory. During his preparation, Mr. Regin tirelessly worked on our son’s ear training and music theory knowledge. He not only addressed the mechanics of playing a piece but made sure to teach our son the history and musical ideas each of his solo pieces had. This helped our son become a great musician but also find his artistic voice. Anyone can teach you to play notes but finding a teacher who can help you develop your own voice is extremely hard. Mr. Regin did all of this with the added difficulty of never teaching Zachary in person.
I've been taking lessons with Jim for about 4 years and have grown immensely as a musician with his help. After taking classical piano lessons for about 2 years, Jim helped me study for the Music Theory AP exam (I got a 5!) and introduced me to jazz piano, which has become one of my favorite genres. I also used what he taught me about music theory to begin composing. The best thing is that while Jim knows a ton and is very passionate about music, he's very laid-back and friendly.
Jim's knowledge about music is extensive. He shares that knowledge in very relatable and friendly ways. He adapts instruction to the needs of his students and is consistent yet flexible and easy to work with. He is positive and gives lots of encouragement while still assuring that his students master skills, techniques, and theory. We have been doing online lessons since COVID started, and it has worked out very well. I am very pleased with my lessons with Jim and would highly recommend him.
