About Lindsay
I love music and passing the love of all things music on to the next generation. I believe everyone has the ability to gain something from either piano or vocal lessons. Piano lessons can be a great foundation to learning other instruments as well. I am committed to catering music lessons to each individual so they have success in their endeavors and we are able, together, to assess what goals the student has and the best way to achieve those goals! :) I also love to have fun!
I simply love seeing people fall in love with music and find a passion for a new instrument or for singing. The arts are such an important part of our development as humans and people and can shape and impact our lives in profound and awesome ways! We all listen to music almost every day on our radio or streaming services and many of those artists started with some kind of music class or instrumental lesson. My desire is to spur on creativity and also establish good technique and habits to help students achieve success.
I went to school for teaching specifically so in some ways it was inevitable! Ha! I even was a student director my senior year in high school of a lower level choir for the entire year as an independent study. I've always had a teachers heart and love sharing my passion for music with those interested in learning and picking up new skills.
I went to school for music education and have a background in vocal and piano as well as 8 years of percussion. I also played the bagpipes and alto saxophone for a long time. Music is my passion. Since college, I've spent over 10 years in a variety of settings directing children's and teen choirs, participating in local music opportunities including singing and playing at my church, doing gigs in the community as a soloist and with colleagues and also writing and arranging music.

When meeting a new student I want to spend some time at a first lesson getting to know them. If they have no prior experience, I assess them to see what kind of repertoire (vocal) or level (piano) we'd be starting at and also what their personal goals for taking lessons are. If students have prior experience, I ask them to bring along a piece they played at a most recent recital or something they're working on currently to hear them and make an initial assessment on their levels and abilities. I also believe it's important for students to be able to ask me questions and get to know me so I allow time for this also.
All types! I've had students with learning disabilities including dyslexia and also students on the autism spectrum. I've had students as young as 5 all the way through adults who decided to pick up piano or vocal lessons again in their 40's and 50's. I love that music is and can be for everyone.
I think it's always about personality. Not all students and teachers or parents and teachers will click. It's so important to know what is important to you and make a decision based on your personal goals. Never be afraid to do a trial lesson before making a commitment! I'm always happy to make a one time lesson and try things out with someone. We want it to be a good fit first and foremost because relationship and understanding is so important in teaching and learning in a healthy environment.
I had a student recently who is very naturally talented and has very good ears tell me that learning the notes and how to read them (because he is able to play by ear) is "a lot harder than he thought it would be but you make it fun Miss Lindsay and now I know why it's important! I'll be able to play so many harder things I like without having to figure it all out in my head!"
I love to foster kids natural creativity and encourage their natural giftings but it's so fun when they can see the additional benefit of learning the technique and skill set and how that combined with their natural talent will take them far!
