About Ms Mitchell

11 years ago, the beginning of my pedagogy endevours with what is now 27 years of the experience with music I already have combined, makes for outstanding lessons.
I would not be the highly recognized, most referred private instructor if it weren't for the incredible students I've been lucky enough to dicepher and master what they most want in transforming the way music is seen, and heard. No one method will ever work for a single person. The only reason I stand out is that I take everything I know and can utulize to tailor and adjust a combination of techniques for my students.
If it weren't for them, I wouldn't have the opportunity to do so.
Tates Music Studio began with a simple goal in mind. But, years of growth and a mixture of all students, each individually translating sheet music into sound, expanding beyond my own expertise, have been the very reason I stayed and continued teaching. I might be the translator guiding the pupil, but the pupil is teaching me more than they could ever know. The value and commitment to something like music is what I see in everyone. Those who take the step are the very reason I enjoy witnessing their take-off! 🎶🎶
My teaching piano happened by pure accident. I started teaching close friends how to read music, and after requests to play songs for them, I sat down and taught them in the capacity that they could remember and understand (Don't forget, everyone learns differently). I realized how much progress was being made by my accidental lessons and the enjoyment of the person playing. Watching the light go off when a new term or type of notation was once gibberish and suddenly understood that particular symbol and what it was referring to in reading it. I think that was when I decided this was a great idea, scary, hard, totally awesome decision to become an instructor.
I have 25 years of experience learning how to play and master piano, the instrument I most commonly teach.
Not only have I performed, taught, recorded and took some common courses, I recently decided to further my knowledge by the Cal Plan offered from MTAC. A very prestigious and almost even more collegiate in particular studies than other schools of music education.

I accommodate my student's needs. When I am first contacted in whichever form, my turn-around time is usually within 2 weeks.
When working with new students I always ensure the student has everything they need to start working with me.
First, I always ensure the first lesson is free, I don't even like to call it a "lesson" more-so than a consultation.
My student is the number one priority, and I always start off with what they want to do, how they want to achieve a certain kind of sound, what genre's they are interested in learning, and most often allow them to speak first.
Once the gauge has been set, I talk about how we can achieve these goals at a pace that fits the student, and what methods of teaching I use to get them there.
For example, I have a student who is dyslexic and a student who is blind.
There are so many types of people who learn piano, and accommodations are necessary when the unordinary or unique comes in with a flying passion to learn. I match the criteria, and if the first consult goes well and I finish my small portfolio of my student, I create a unique profile for each student and in follow up, again 2 weeks being the turn around to design the right methodology for the student, we can proceed and start lessons.
Name it, I will take them in and do the best I can, otherwise, I have worked with all age groups, in addition to some of the following information below.
Because of the range of students I teach, I have the advantage to really prepare what is best for the coursework and how to match it to the style of music the student wants to learn, all ages, blind, dyslexic, etc.
I am on my way to specializing in mental capabilities, which include Autism, Aspergers, Down Syndrome, and other neurological categorical "disorders", I have experience teaching and 25 years to accommodate what I was meant to have and to give back with the experiences I was so lucky to express growing up.
The most common age groups are 4-10yrs old, adults of any age are the second most common. I would say the 3rd group is rare but still happens!
Do not put yourself into a shell. If you're teacher makes you feel less inclined to learn, and you feel forced, leave. I do not allow that negative behavior in my head space or work space.
Do your research. Sometimes you may think the teacher with nothing much more than a picture and some email address is a pass. Maybe there is a teacher who's lessons are so expensive, that you think, well, this must be the better teacher. Consult, ask for references, check backgrounds. Its important.
I couldn't if I tried! Every moment I am teaching and learning more while teaching, I never feel like I am "in time", and by this, I mean it serves a purpose of presence, something not everyone enjoys often enough.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Never pretend you have no questions. Every single question is a very important question, if you have it, ask it. Don't be scared to ask! That is what we are here for, to answer!
What am I learning? What kind of music can I learn to play on piano? Can I learn to play the music without understanding music notation? Am I allowed to practice only during a lesson? If I don' like something, can I skip it? If I don't have time to practice, what should I do? Can you teach me how to sing and play instruments at the same time?
There is no such thing as a stupid question. Don't worry, I encourage you to challenge your capabilities.

Perfect! Tate is very good with kids. And kids love her way of teaching and her personality!
She is teaching our kids and now our friend's kids, as well- and kids can't wait for her lessons. She is always very entertaining while getting them to learn how to play piano and to love doing it!Perfect! My 10 year old took lessons with Ms. Mitchell and we had a great experience. She’s patient and meets the child where they are. She tailors her approach to fit each unique need. She is able to inspire an interest in music and then layers in technique. My son absolutely adores her and anxiously awaits each weeks lesson.
Perfect! She's very patient with my kiddo, and works on not only skills but his motivation. I can tell immediately after the initial session with her that she's very encouraging, passionate, and most of all loves her job and her student! She also thoughtfully brings the individualized lesson plan geared towards his needs. It's fun to work with her!
Perfect! We did our first lesson yesterday with Ms. Mitchell, and she was amazing. My daughter Quinn is 7 and completely new to the piano, and Ms. Mitchell has customized an approach and lesson plan very specific to my daughter, her interests, and the way she learns. As soon as she left Quinn said she wanted to do more lessons, which was really exciting to hear. Beyond that, Ms. Mitchell is very friendly, personable, communicative and patient. I can't recommend her enough, and am excited to see how our daughter's piano skills grow over time!

Yes it is a fact that she have a messy car…haha. But to be honest she’s a person with the most patience that I’ve ever seen in anybody. Because it is a fact that I am the most impatient person in this world. I learned a lot from her, apart from the music thing. She always see good in people and try her best to do her part in helping them in any way possible. To me she’s my boss lady. She’s a great mentor :)
Ms. Mitchell instructs by the first session with her (which is free) and creates an entire portfolio for you so you can learn how to play music the way you are best at learning!!!! no teachers I tried before did helped with this!!! Very impressed with her work and highly recommended as a professional. I wouldn’t go to anyone else because you can see the genuine appreciation for music in Ms. Mitchell and her passion for her students!
Jess is such a phenomenal teacher. She teaches in a way that makes you completely understand what to do and how to do it. She not only teaches the basics of piano, she teaches advanced theory - something I have always wanted to learn. She is the best teacher I have had, and I have gone through about five until I found her. She even gives her first lesson free to ensure the student trying out for piano is comfortable and actually enjoys learning. She is the best of the best and Recommend her to everyone, which also brings me to my next point. She teaches children from 4 years old to adults at any age. Her range of knowledge in theory is astounding to me. She also makes you feel so comfortable and has such a warm personality. I’ve not only made a teacher out of her, but a dear friend as well.
Jessica is incredibly talented and classically trained pianist. She learned music theory early in her studies and uses that as a base for teaching. Also, she makes learning to play fun.
