About Rhea

I started teaching private voice and piano lessons during my Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Utah. I realized that I loved teaching and helping young singers to acquire a sense of confidence in their performing and overall education. After I graduated from Florida State University with my Master of Music degree, I was given the opportunity to teach voice lessons full-time. I was able to use my training in diction, vocal pedagogy, technique, and literature to help my student’s progress in their performing aspirations. I’ve also been fortunate to have the opportunity to teach at the university level during a Teaching Assistantship for my Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University. I taught Class Voice to non-music majors and I taught one-on-one voice lessons to Music Education and Music Therapy majors.

I’ve had numerous opportunities to mentor and perform to a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds. For example, as the Soprano Teaching Artist with Arizona Opera, I performed in two 35-minute narrative opera productions to elementary and secondary-age school children. Many of the schools that we performed for were Title-1 and Inner-City schools and included students that came from low-income households, were refugees, or had other special circumstances. I also had the opportunity to create and direct donor and fundraising events, concerts, and recitals, in order to teach adults and children about music for Arizona Opera. In addition to my duties as a Teaching Artist, I also wrote my DMA dissertation on Arizona Opera’s Education Program specifically focusing on the activities of the group, OperaTunity, and the development of community outreach and education events.

My ultimate goal in life is to be an educated performer on the stage and in the classroom. I believe that the more I continue to learn the more prepared I will be onstage as a performer and an educator. I have had the desire to learn and perform ever since I was young. I was taught at an early age that if I work hard I can achieve my goals. This can be seen throughout my life; in school, my singing and vocal development, and my personal life. I also enjoy learning new repertoire and challenging myself to discover the depth of my artistic and vocal capabilities. My future aspirations include performing locally and nationally, as well as establishing a studio that gives students the opportunity to give back to the community by way of music outreach and educational recitals.

When teaching, I believe students learn best through example and active participation. The purpose of education is to inspire and my goal as an educator is to bring creative inspiration to the classroom. A passion for music is what drives me every day and to pass on the knowledge and experience I have learned. I also believe it is very important to be organized and clear in presenting information and ideas. Students need a professor that is confident, knowledgeable, and provides a constructive working environment. This ensures musical growth in both performance and vocal technique.

English

The first lesson includes a discussion of vocalises/warm-ups, music background, history of repertoire, and musical goals. The first 15-20 minutes of the lesson is spent on warming up the fingers with scales, or vocalises for the voice.

The student will then have prepared a piece in which to present to determine the student's musical development. Afterwards, we work on ways to improve, using musicanship and pedagogy teachniques. If the piece is a vocal work, there is also the text to consider, especially if the language is not the singer's native tongue.
