About Andrew

It's been a fascinating journey helping students apply their critical thinking and persistence to overcome challenges.

Teaching music since 2012, I have developed deeper respect for students who take courage to try something new and unfamiliar.

Instead of viewing students as merely classroom goers, I view students as those who reach for understanding.

Striving to be the best guide for learners through fun and challenging times, I prioritize not only effective teaching, but also patience, humility, and empathy.

During college, I worked as a tutor for Music Theory-- assisting students who needed more clarification and confidence about the language of music.

After graduation, I began teaching piano in my local community where I continued helping others learn the language of music.



I have a Bachelor's Degree from Berklee College of Music, which is well-known for its focus around contemporary genres-- such as pop, gospel, & jazz-- as well as improvisation and music technology.

What I always gauge for are (1) The student’s overall willingness to learn and practice and (2) the student’s inclination for analyzing and figuring out patterns.

I will also look into ways to make music learning worthwhile. This involves learning about the student's family, background, and interests-- including favorite songs and artists.



A majority of students have been ages 8-12, many who started with little to no previous background in music.

I have also worked with adults, ranging from no experience to many years of experience. Experienced adults would typically inquire about subjects such as improvisation, composition, and ear training.



For Parents: my advice is to also look into group lessons or activities, either as reinforcement for one-on-one lessons or as a budget friendly alternative of immersing your child into music. I recommend checking if your child's school offers activities such as band, orchestra, and choir.

As far as I have heard, former classmates of mine were glad they took part in some form of musical activity during school.



I have a student whom I have taught for 2 years. In the beginning, he could barely play even the easiest songs and would often mix up his left hand & right hand.

However, what makes him stand out is his motivation to practice and his openness whenever I point out his mistakes. He is an avid music lover and shares a newly discovered song to me every week.

Now at the age of 10, he plays both hands with ease and I have plans to work on cleaning up his recent rendition of Fur Elise. I am proud of his persistence and positivity!



A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
For Parents, some questions I would suggest are:
- Is your child capable of not only sitting through but also engaging with the teacher for at least 30 minutes?
- Is your child capable of dedicating time outside of lesson to practice?
If the answer to any of the above questions is no, then a question to think about is:
- Are one-on-one lessons worth paying for even if the student does not make any clear progress?
