About Tessa

I have been singing since I was 11 years old, and recently finished a doctorate of musical arts in vocal performance and pedagogy at the University of Colorado Boulder. Singing and teaching singing have been my career for my entire life, and they are what I absolutely love to do. I have taught singers ranging in genres from opera to musical theater to pop to jazz to North and South Indian classical. I have assisted in rehabilitating singers from vocal injury. I have worked with gender queer singers on testosterone therapy to maintain the singing voice during periods of heavy vocal change. I am passionate about tailoring my teaching to each student's needs in order to accomplish their goals in taking voice lessons.

I love my job because I learn just as much from each student as they learn from me. It is such a joy to discover what my students are passionate about, and to help them meet their expectations.

I began teaching voice students during my masters under the tutelage of renowned voice teacher and pedagogue Freda Herseth. It was something I knew I wanted to pursue because of all of the amazing guidance I have received from voice teachers in the past, and because of other not as stellar experiences with voice teachers and my own singing.

I have been studying voice privately for 16 years. I received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University in Italian music history and a minor in vocal performance. I received my master of music within the University of Michigan's renowned vocal performance program. I finished my doctorate in vocal performance and pedagogy in May of 2018 at the University of Colorado Boulder where I taught a full studio of private voice students and undergraduate group classes in voice. I have been singing professionally since the age of 11.

When I first begin working with a student, we discuss their goals and reasons for taking lessons. After making note of these, I then vocalize the student in order to expand their goals to encompass specific ways in which I think that they can improve their singing. I then design a flexible program through which we will accomplish their goals, and work as a team with the student to make sure that they feel comfortable and confident with all that we work on together.

I have worked with students age 12 to 56 in the opera, musical theater, jazz, pop, and North Indian classical music genres. I have worked with students to assist them in successfully recovering from vocal injuries to gender-queer students looking to maintain their voices during dramatic hormonal changes.

My best advice in finding a teacher is don't be afraid to try more than one. Since voice lessons are conducted one on one, it's important that the singer and their teacher are able to communicate and work well together.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why are you taking voice lessons?

What are your goals and objectives in taking voice lessons? Are they tangible like an upcoming performance or audition, or are they less tangible like the desire to improve and simply learn more about the voice?

Which genres are you interested in singing and performing?

Are you willing to try new genres, and vocal exercises that make you feel vulnerable because they are strange or silly?
