About John
My Passion and Goal for Teaching:
The best part about teaching someone anything is the little light bulb you see turn on in their minds as they finally understand something that has been beating them down. My goal would be to achieve this in everyone I tutor, to explore multiple ways to learn the same topic to find the best way for the student and to inspire the student to pursue education.
My Current and Incoming Experience:
I don't have much tutor experience yet other than a couple of times helping a younger sibling. With this being said, I am on a path to graduating from USF with a major in Science Education, and on my way there I plan to become a substitute teacher.
What I can offer:
The two subjects I'd say I do best in would be Music Education and Earth Science. I specialize in Low Brass instruments (Trombone, Bass Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, etc.)
My downsides:
My downsides are that as far as Earth Science goes, my education is still very basic in that category and I can mostly only help in the broad categories. As far as music, other than all low brass instruments I can only tutor in Flute.
I enjoy most being able to inspire people to continue doing the things they love. I know it can be very discouraging to be failing or struggling with a subject. For example math, a lot of people struggle with math and tutoring benefits both the tutor and the student. The student will ideally develop a new and better understanding of their material. While the tutor will get a healthy reminder on how to do the things they might not have thought about in over five years.
So I feel that I'd enjoy most being able to relearn forgotten knowledge while helping people gain new unlearned knowledge.
I did about 3 years of volunteering at middle school bands and during this time I helped individual students turn on a couple of light bulbs in their heads. The feeling I got from this inspired me to want to teach and inspire young minds. Once I started substitute teaching I found that I also really enjoyed helping students understand many other subjects.
I am a new tutor and have a lot to learn myself! I am a current college student and am constantly expanding my knowledge. I am currently a Junior in college. I am an active substitute teacher in Polk County Florida.

I'd like to offer the first hour for free to give the student a chance to form an opinion of me. During this time I'd let them ask any questions they want of me. I would also ask them a couple of questions that might help me determine the best way to help them, such as; Are you a hands-on learner? Do you have a hard time memorizing content? How long would you say your attention span is? I feel that these questions will help guide me to customize a plan to best suit them.
I have worked with many middle school students, in the band category in particular. I also currently primarily work with high school students as a substitute teacher.
Student/Teacher bonds are very important, if you decide as a student that you do not like the teacher, you will not listen. If you decide as a student that you like the teacher, you will learn and remember so much more. My advice would be to find the teacher or tutor that you look up to the most as a healthy peer.
I am very fond of the James Webb Telescope and the inspiration that it will bring to minds like mine and millions more.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Everyone is different and that's what makes the world go round. Students should think about how well they interact with others, in other words, how introverted or extroverted they are. A question to follow this could be;
How patient are you?
As a student, I've noticed that some teachers have no patience and will have a hard time explaining the fine details.
What is it that you would expect from me?
Often times teachers will say "You should have learned this last year" and often times most students do not remember. So establishing a knowledge base would be very useful in knowing where to hit the ground running.
There are tons of other questions that the students could ask the tutors and teachers, these questions are specific to the student.

Because I am a new tutor until I start getting feedback on how to get better and dive into more training for tutoring I will keep my rate at $20 an hour.
