About Alastair

Please visit my website for more details: (concealed information)

I am a full-time professional tutor with a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Imperial College London, an MSc with Distinction from the University of Edinburgh, a First-Class BSc from Loughborough University, and a PGCE in Mathematics from King’s College London. Over the past six years I have delivered more than 7,500 online lessons, specialising in IGCSE, IB (SL and HL), International A-Level, and UK A-Level. Many of my students achieve A and A* grades and progress to leading universities such as Oxbridge, Imperial, UCL and LSE.

Parents choose me because I combine high-level academic expertise with practical exam insight. I also use tools that make my lessons far more effective than AI platforms or generic tutoring. With access to a vast database of past questions, I can instantly generate custom exam-style papers that target a student’s exact weaknesses. AI can provide random questions, but it cannot understand exam board nuance, teach problem-solving strategies, or give expert feedback. My approach ensures that every student gets the right practice at the right time, explained in the right way.

Each lesson is structured, clear, and exam-focused. I explain topics step by step, encourage active problem solving, and provide detailed feedback throughout. After the session, students receive worked solutions and targeted follow-up practice so they know exactly how to improve.

I cover all strands of Maths and Further Maths – Pure, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision – and have extensive experience across exam boards including Edexcel, OCR, AQA, Cambridge International and the IB. Whether a student needs to strengthen core skills or master advanced exam technique, lessons are designed to match their goals.

Support does not stop when the lesson ends. Students can contact me between sessions if they get stuck, and I usually reply the same day. This ongoing support, combined with my ability to generate focused exam practice instantly, makes online lessons with me not just as effective as in-person tutoring but often better.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I've had a keen interest in maths since I was at school. This is a passion that I've always been keen to share with others. Going into teaching gave me the opportunity to do this. While I loved every moment of teaching in the classroom, my real interest was teaching on a one-to-one basis. For this reason I turned to tutoring.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I like to teach anything that students are struggling with. There's nothing more satisfying in teaching than to find a way of helping a student master something they previously struggled with. However, my favourite topic to teach would have to be probability. I enjoy the problem solving aspect of this and the fact that no two probability questions are ever the same. My least favourite topic to teach is Construction and Scale Diagrams. This is something that really needs to be taught in person and is difficult to do online.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was inspired by my chemistry teacher at school. He made an already enjoyable subject even more enjoyable.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, organisation, a good understanding of a student's needs and, of course, good subject knowledge.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I started online tutoring in August 2019. At the time I believed that this was the future of private tuition and wanted to gain experience of it before it really took off. Six months later Covid happened and everyone moved to private tuition.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Convincing students of the importance of doing their homework! An hour of tuition each week is wasted unless it's followed up by a student doing homework on the topic that was tutored. I always give my students homework following lessons and will expect this to be completed by the following lesson. We will then start the next lesson by going through the completed homework.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is helping students master something that they have had difficulty with. There are many different ways of teaching the same topic. Being able to identify a student's misconceptions and adapt my teaching to help their understanding is something that I take great pride in.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

My patience, organisation, a good understanding of a student's needs and, of course, good subject knowledge (see above!)
